JeffSkydiver 0 #1 February 6, 2005 Hey In filling out the profile it asks, "Your weight with gear." I know in choosing canopy size, the jumper's weight with the gear on must be known in order to compute wing loading. Without actually weighing oneself with the gear on, assuming for a moment there is no scale immediately available or the gear is not immediately availble, is there a rule of thumb to use for the weight of the gear? How much to add to one's actual weight? 25, 30, 40 pounds? I know rigs differ in weight as they differ in size and brand, but what's the ball park figure? I'm presently jumping student gear with a 260 sq. ft. canopy. How much should I add? I KNOW, before I actually buy gear or even rent it, I will weigh myself and the gear at the DZ. They have a scale right there. I'm just looking for a ball park figure to use now. Thanks, jt* Let's all do this safe enough that we can still do this in our 90's. mattjw916 2 #2 February 6, 2005 student gear is heavy... at least 25lbs... maybe more... remember wing-load doesn't need to be calculated to ten decimal places so an estimate is fine... NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
OzoneJunkie 0 #3 February 6, 2005 My mirage (G3 MT) with velo 103, PD-126R weighs 18 pounds, if I recall. So, that's 229 sq. ft. total in my rig ( look, I can do math! ;) ) Of course the velo weighs a bit more than a similar sized, non-crossed braced canopy. But, yeah, I suspect student gear is in the 25 to 30 pound range.
superstu 0 #4 February 6, 2005 remember it's not just your rig. it's all the other stuff you wear as well. KrisFlyZ 0 #5 February 6, 2005 My Mirage with a Sabre2 170 and a PD 176R adds about 30 lbs(if not 30 its very close). Bigger canopies must add quite a bit more. Kris.
gdmusumeci 0 #6 February 6, 2005 Just as another data point, my Vector 3 (Cypres, Spectre 210, PD-193R) weighs 26 pounds. I believe that the rest of my jumping kit weighs about ten pounds, shoes included.
BlueSBDeath 2 #7 February 6, 2005 The best thing to do is get on a scale, then get on a scale with your gear. While at a boogie last year I let a rigger pack my rig for a demonstration, and he weighed my rig, it was 17 pounds. It is a Power Racer (300/300) with Stl-107, and PD-113. tbrown 26 #12 February 8, 2005 You don't have to dress up in all your gear. Just wear "normal" clothes you jump in, sling the rig on your back, your jumpsuit over one arm and hold your helmet & stuff in one hand and step on the bathroom scale. I'd always guessed at +30 lbs and that's exactly how it turned out. Of course if you jump a smaller rig and canopies, it could be 5 or 10 lbs less. It helps me watch my weight, as my reserve isn't legal above 254 lbs and I like to stay at least 10 lbs below that. Dropzones like to ask this question too, it helps them to not overload the planes.
