Swooping:Alti reliability

Recommended Posts

With recent tech improvements and the introduction of digital altimeters, there is a danger to believe what you read and not what you see !

Consider recent events, is the technology proven to be reliable ?

Remember we are all responsible for our own actions out there. Would you let a micro chip drive your car at 40mph ?

I just realized how off my alt. is by tapping it with my thumb it usually moves 500 foot:o. Makes me want to remount my neptune back on my hand. I know that it isn't perfect also tho.

Postes r made from an iPad or iPhone. Spelling and gramhair mistakes guaranteed move along,

I have absolute confindence in my Neptune and Suunto to interpret the air preassure changes properly.

As long as the conditions haven't changed, that gives a pretty good reliability as to reading altitude properly.

I'm curious what "recent events" you're refering to...?

isn't it as simple as looking at the various user manuals (usually free downloads) of the various alti's to find what the tolerances are?

as a newbie i wouldn't want to suggest anything but it was my impression that experience in eye balling heights of 500 feet and below are critical for swooping.

It already does.

uhm, actually, no, it does not.

it does on almost all cars now control the engine (fuelling, spark, etc.) and various other functions, but it does not drive your vehicle

on the other hand, autopilots do fly and land passenger airplanes....

but then, you have to consider the development and testing that goes into a system like that and all the built in redundancy - good luck finding any of that in an alti used for skydiving....

soon to be gone

If my eyes say I am high, but my alti says I am low, I trust my alti.

In most cases my eyes match my alti. ( that do not mean I have a load of numbers on my eyeballs :S)

I have absolute confindence in my eyes.

the neptune is a useful reliable tool

a: you didn't answer his question.

b: eyes can mislead and give incorrect answers, just like any instrument.

Having absolute confidence in any one system is a fools errand.

Cruise control? It sure seems like the car is taking care of the speed. I use it when I'm on really long trips, and I trust it. It's a good way to avoid speeding too.

what do you want? seriously. do you have to disect every word..

you know what the hell i mean you just want to say "fool"...

so? you calling me a fool now... notice my paranoia?

anyways. "trust your eyes" and it is good to reference other "tools" also..

is that better?
