mallyrich 0 #1 July 7, 2005 With recent tech improvements and the introduction of digital altimeters, there is a danger to believe what you read and not what you see ! Consider recent events, is the technology proven to be reliable ? Remember we are all responsible for our own actions out there. Would you let a micro chip drive your car at 40mph ? Anvilbrother 0 #2 July 7, 2005 I just realized how off my alt. is by tapping it with my thumb it usually moves 500 foot. Makes me want to remount my neptune back on my hand. I know that it isn't perfect also tho. Postes r made from an iPad or iPhone. Spelling and gramhair mistakes guaranteed move along,
AndyMan 7 #3 July 7, 2005 I have absolute confindence in my Neptune and Suunto to interpret the air preassure changes properly. As long as the conditions haven't changed, that gives a pretty good reliability as to reading altitude properly. I'm curious what "recent events" you're refering to...? _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

diablopilot 2 #5 July 8, 2005 Wow. Something we agree on. If you hook it in (or bounce) because your alti is not functioning properly, you probably were not cut out for this sport.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. sagan 0 #8 July 8, 2005 isn't it as simple as looking at the various user manuals (usually free downloads) of the various alti's to find what the tolerances are? as a newbie i wouldn't want to suggest anything but it was my impression that experience in eye balling heights of 500 feet and below are critical for swooping.-Patrick

whatever 0 #10 July 8, 2005 QuoteQuoteWould you let a micro chip drive your car at 40mph ? It already does. uhm, actually, no, it does not. it does on almost all cars now control the engine (fuelling, spark, etc.) and various other functions, but it does not drive your vehicle on the other hand, autopilots do fly and land passenger airplanes.... but then, you have to consider the development and testing that goes into a system like that and all the built in redundancy - good luck finding any of that in an alti used for skydiving.... soon to be gone
Shark 0 #11 July 8, 2005 My Neptune has "swoop" alarms which only confirm my altitude sight picture.
speedy 0 #12 July 8, 2005 If my eyes say I am high, but my alti says I am low, I trust my alti. If my eyes say I am low, but my alti says I am high, I trust my eyes. apixel 0 #14 July 8, 2005 Cruise control? It sure seems like the car is taking care of the speed. I use it when I'm on really long trips, and I trust it. It's a good way to avoid speeding too. -A QuoteQuoteQuoteWould you let a micro chip drive your car at 40mph ?
