Leg strap pain

Recommended Posts

Hi all I am a new skydiver with 12 jumps, fresh off AFF and on my way to that A license. I have been using sabre 190 student rigs and they were just fine, very comfortable canopy ride. I did my last two jumps on a sportier 170 rig (student) and both times the leg straps just about killed me. I don't want kids and thats a good thing because I don't think I could now. They ruined my canopy rides. What is the problem here? I am not sure of the container but I do believe the main is still a sabre.

Think i'll go back to the 190 unless they have a 170 with a different container. I know the idea is to downsize, but geez I know this is not the way it is suppose to be.
I should have been a kickass drummer and a world famous first base man.

It sounds like the 170 is in a rig with crappy leg straps. Ether the pads are very narrow or worn out or both. Talk with the DZ management to see if that canopy could be put into a different rig for you.

I've posted this quite a few times over the years...

Seatbelt pads you can buy at wal-mart. Cut to fit and put them over your leg strap (most have velcro, so you don't have to unthread the legstrap). BAM, instant comfy padding for those old worn out student rigs.

what a great idea!

I remember when I went from the student harness to my first used rig - what a difference! Then years later when I finally got my first custom made fit, like night and day...

I'll check at Target, I hate Wal-mart! Thanks:P

That's a good idea, especially for noobs renting gear. They can add the pads to the rig and take them back when they're done or using a different rig.

Those Aggies are smart. ;) NASA has one fixing stuff on the Space Station right now. :P

Try oven mitts down your jump suit under where your leg straps go. I just posted this pic on another thread yesterday when a guy was talking about some discomfort. This is what I was dealing with until I found confort in the oven mitts. Now it's sort of a joke around the dz...who gets to help tape the oven mitts to my crotch.

I'm not very knowledgeable here but aren't 190's and especially 170's a bit smal for students to be jumping ?? I don't know how other dropzones function on this topic, but don't most DZ's put students on 260's ??

Nope. Infact some students would have serious problems under a 260. We have quite a few 100lbs chicks at my DZ. Put them under a Navigator 260-300 and their wingloading would be such that they wouldn't even get much from flaring. They would be at the severe merci of thermals and winds. So they start on something more appropiate like a Navigator 220 or 200 then end up jumping Sabre2s 190s and 170s by the time they're on Coached jumps and finishing up their licenses.

When would you rather see someone downsize? Gradually under the advice of an instructor during their student progression or right off student status when a smaller person buys an appropiate 150sq ft canopy for their first rig, after jumping a 260 the entire time?

out of topic but, from my log book...
out of 46 jumps
4-silo230
14-sabre190
28-sabre170

from the 14 jumps on 190, last 8 have been bcuz another student was using the 170. i weight 155lbs w/o gear. stood up all 46 landings. btw, anyone has a sabre170 or thriatlon160 for sale? :)

My bad . . . I weigh in between 190lbs. and 200lbs. with gear on so I see what you mean. Also, I started on static line gear jumping 260-280's, but when I got to BOC's I was jumping a Falcon 215. Now I jump a Sabre 190 (ZP) and it's actually a pretty fun canopy.

It's just that I got some advice recently from an excellent canopy pilot and he mentioned that people downsize way too fast for their own good without actually learning how to "fly the shit out of" their current canopy. I wasn't taking body weight into account.

Hey Ed!

The 190's are Sabre 2s in Vector SE student rigs, and the 170 is a Sabre 1 in an older Talon container.

Have you mentioned the problems to Mandy or Ernie? They may be able to help out.

It was after my second landing of the day and my second ( uncomfortable) ride that I did say something to Mandy, but I was leaving and we didn't really get into it. I'll talk to her this weekend about it.

On another note, are there people from SDD going to Houston this weekend for the Skyfest 2006 down there?

I believe there are a few, but I think the majority of us will be at SDD this weekend. I'd like to head down there, but I gotta work.

Are you planning on coming to Casino Night the 29th?
