It's about ending the family reunification policy that was implemented in the current immigration law by conservatives. At the time they thought it would bring in more white people because America was mainly white. They miscalculated the demand from Europe to get into the USA. Instead of Norwegians people from "shit-hole countries" brought in more and more relatives. Trump and his white nationalism adviser Miller know they can not get this racist garbage through congress but they also know it will cement their popularity with the deplorables.
wolfriverjoe 1,368 #3 May 17, 2019 Well, if they did it truthfully, then it would be fine. They won't, of course. They only want people with 'advanced education' to fill 'good jobs'. You know, people from "nice countries", like Norway. If they did it allowing people to come in and fill needed jobs, then they'd be allowing all sorts of people from 'shithole countries' to come in and fill jobs at the bottom of the ladder. Picking fruits and vegetables, working slaughterhouses, construction, hotel/resort/restaurant service, packing tandems, that sort of work. Those jobs are the ones going unfilled. Allowing immigrants to come in and fill those jobs (ya know? We have a lot of people trying to come in and get low level jobs) would be a great boost to the economy. Allowing them to be here legally, on the books, being paid a legal wage, subject to workers protections, all of that would be a really good idea. But they're 'brown people'. So it won't come to pass.

yoink 321 #7 May 18, 2019 We already have merit based immigration. It’s called the visa / green card / citizenship process.

I was wondering when someone would notice this. I swear, people don't even research anything any more. Their favorite media source says something and they repost it within seconds without a second thought.

The suggestion is to change the priorities given to the various "preference categories" in the preference system for assigning immigrant visas. "The preference system is a method, based on categories (or "preferences"), of distributing the limited number of immigrant visa numbers available each year. Obtaining an immigrant visa number is an essential step in the immigration process, and it means that an immigrant visa has been assigned to you."
