SNL: Pete Davidson apology

Recommended Posts

Last week Pete Davidson did a skit in which he made fun of a GOP candidate Dan Crenshaw. (starts at 0:56): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukbtA3df8BI&t=56s

This caused an uproar, so this week, he did an apology: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKaakjMVtyE

For those not familiar with Pete:
- He was 7yo when his fireman father was last seen entering the WTC on 9/11.
- He was recently dumped by GF Ariana Grande, (whose song can be heard on the cellphone in the skit).

Bad on SNL,... Good on SNL. This republican seems like he has leadership potential. Too bad his party has been captured and held prisoner.

WaPo: Dan Crenshaw started the week as a punchline and ended it as a star. The real story came before that.

I saw both skits. The mea culpa 2nd skit was even better than the 1st, and the vet tie in was well timed.

I didn't think the 1st skit was as bad as some thought. The skit was low brow all around, basically anytime you are poking fun of people based on looks it's weak comedy; the fact that Pete spread the jokes around and included himself made it equalizing and that helped it. Also in the subtext was the admonishment to please go beyond the surface and learn a bit about the candidates on the ballot before voting, and that was a useful message.

It did get me wondering about what is fair game in a bit like that. Fashion choices are easiest; hairstyles or beards or makeup choices. Other "choices" are a little less easy, like overweight (or underweight). Genetic oddities are a bit more touchy, like big ears or mouth. And touchiest of all are scars or other visible trauma esp received in the line of duty.

I don't like to think that one kind of gag is completely off limits while the others are ok, but you go for the weak joke and it sometimes blows up.
It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

I hadn't seen either skit, only heard the uproar.

Having seen them now, the first one wasn't as bad as I'd expected but it was still borderline at best - maaaybe could have saved it if he'd been a little less dismissive in that one about how the wound had been received? Still iffy.

Second one was pretty good redemption, and good play by Crenshaw.
You are playing chicken with a planet - you can't dodge and planets don't blink. Act accordingly.

I hadn't heard about it, but I thought it was funny, and the 2nd was well played. Still comes in 2nd to Jimmy Fallon impersonating Robert De Niro on weekend update then De Niro coming on later to respond. :D

I didn't follow any of this until I saw the SNL follow-up. Now having seen the first skit I can see why Crenshaw didn't give a shit. The people who did give a shit probably have too much time on their hands and like to point out when Libtards offend people.

An interesting quote from that piece. I can swear I've heard something like this before:

=================
How, then, do we live together in this world of differing ideas? For starters, let’s agree that the ideas are fair game. If you think my idea is awful, you should say as much. But there is a difference between attacking an idea and attacking the person behind that idea. Labeling someone as an “-ist” who believes in an “-ism” because of the person’s policy preference is just a shortcut to playground-style name-calling, cloaked in political terminology. It’s also generally a good indication that the attacker doesn’t have a solid argument and needs a way to end debate before it has even begun.

Ya, sad people can't take a joke.

I like the guy, but the best part of the skit was when he agreed that Martin Short was funnier. I just don't see any new cast member rivaling that of 70s-90s SNL.

They have only Trump to thank. . .
