C'mon -- he's the first in nearly 6 centuries to resign. I'm sure there were a few in there who were pretty non compos mentis by the time they died; lotsa tradition playing against that resignation decision.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I know this is just a wonderful coincidence, but yesterday I just watched the HBO documentary "Mea Maxima Culpa" about the rape of children and the pope's direct involvement in enabling the offending Priest to remain in contact with young children.
