A Very Fine Speech

Recommended Posts

I agree with your opinion Max.

Regarding the speech, I believe he did what he had to do. The stark differences in McCain and Obama's resumes were well spelled out.

I think what a lot of people get trapped in is his lack of charisma. He is a dull speaker. He does not have the charisma that Obama and Palin have. It has nothing to do though with his vast experience and his ability to lead this country. Charisma is a gift. You either have it or you don't. It's like the ability to sing well. You either have it or you don't.

I'll take McCain's experience over Obama's charisma for POTUS.

I believe the McCain-Palin ticket is making the Dem. campaign very nervous.

It will be a close election and I have no idea who will win. Obama's coronation may have been quite premature.

McCain admitted that too? Oh the humanity!

You know better. You know it was Obama.

How do you feel about past drug use and character?

Same as I feel about Bush and Clinton.

I wonder how JSM III avoided court martial for his "conduct unbecoming". Having an admiral for a daddy, maybe?

A married, active duty naval officer having an adulterous affair while his wife is recovering from a car accident is a sign of CHARACTER?

How about admitted drug use?

If anything, admitted drug use is an indicator of positive character.

Do you understand the meaning of the word "wonder"?

It was just this past May that an O-4 was sent to the brig for "conduct unbecoming". Her father isn't an admiral, though.

No - it falls into the category of wondering.

English lesson for you and Ron:

"I wonder if X", is not the same as "X is true".

Hey! It was just a question, yet you get so defensive . A lesson for you: "Would that fit into the category of 'lies?' or 'half-truths?'" is not the same as "That would fit into the category of 'lies or half-truths'." :P:P:P

I answered your question - I told you what category it fit in. No need for YOU to be so defensive.:P

Let me repeat:

I WONDER why John McCain's "conduct unbecoming" (aka adultery) while an active duty naval officer went unpunished, when it is a violation of the UCMJ. I WONDER if it had anything to do with his father's being an admiral.

In addition, I WONDER why people think he has good "character".

So there. You wondered, and I asked a question. There was no reason for you to give me an English lesson. I got that one in the 5th grade or so, but thanks anyway, professor. :S:S (You can say, "you're welcome, doctor," if you're into being polite.)

In the late 90's McCain voted to overide GWB's veto on 2 seperate occasions. That's not simply voting with Bush, that's in your face trying to overide GWB's veto.

A stellar example of righty revisionist history.

You might want to check your facts.

If McCain voted to override vetos in the late 90s, it wasn't shrub who was president.
GWB took the oath of office in January, 2001.

Repeating talking points verbatim without a clue as to truth or falseness of the claims is pathetic.

Have you no shame?

No, you were trying to IMPLY without proof. When called on it you back peddle to your normal defense.

I really expect better from a guy that has a PhD to not play stupid mind games and word tricks.

Hey and I just asked a question and you got all upset...Ring a little too close to the truth?

I thought it was an excellent speech. I was touched by his opening up about his years as a POW and how it affected him. He admitted he'd been broken. He had an epiphany...who wouldn't? How he couldn't feed himself and would have died if his fellow captives hadn't taken care of him.

It goes to character. I think McCain has character Obama can't even come close to.

Thia April will be 5 years since my divorce. It's been difficult but I can't imagine the same amount of time in Hanoi. I don't think I could do it. I doubt many of us could.

He's an "imperfect servant". He knows many in his own party don't care for him. He admitted the Reps and Dems had failed the American people. I truly believe he'll do great things to change that.

So the guy who votes with Bush +90% of the time, and has himself been part of the PROBLEM he identifies for +20 years, is going to be the agent of change?

Anyone who believes that is an imbecile.

(I expect they also believed Bush when he promised no nation building, and a small and short term deficit - suckers!)

This is honestly one of the dumbest and most idiotic things that I have heard at the DNCC and in the talking points over the last couple of months as the Democrats try and tie McCain as the third term for Bush. It is an effective campaign attempt but it does not make any sense.

Has it occurred to you that George Bush doesn’t have a vote in the Senate? So just how do you measure the percentage of times that McCain is voting “with” the president? Well, perhaps you could measure the number of times that a Senator votes with the Republican members. Ahhh … but remember, most Senate votes are unanimous. This would mean that the only way not to “vote with the president” would be not to vote at all. As Dick Morris wrote: “The fact that McCain backs commending a basketball team on its victory doesn’t mean that he is in lockstep ideologically with the president.”

Morris also points out a series of important issues on which Bush and McCain did not agree:

McCain fought for campaign finance reform — McCain-Feingold — that Bush resisted and ultimately signed because he had no choice.
McCain led the battle to restrict interrogation techniques of terror suspects and to ban torture.
McCain went with Joe Lieberman on a tough measure to curb climate change, something Bush denies is going on.
McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts when they passed.
McCain urged the Iraq surge, a posture Bush rejected for years before conceding its wisdom.
McCain favors FDA regulation of tobacco and sponsored legislation to that effect, a position all but a handful of Republican senators oppose.
McCain’s energy bill, also with Lieberman, is a virtual blueprint for energy independence and development of alternate sources.
After the Enron scandal, McCain introduced sweeping reforms in corporate governance and legislation to guarantee pensions and prohibit golden parachutes for executives. Bush opposed McCain’s changes and the watered-down Sarbanes-Oxley bill eventuated.
McCain has been harshly critical of congressional overspending, particularly of budgetary earmarks, a position Bush only lately adopted (after the Democrats took over Congress).
Using the same methodology you would probably find that most Democrat senators also voted with Bush 90% of the time.

------------------------------------------------------------
i Think it is kinda funny that when someone pionts out the real truth about things, like you have, the left goes on with other things and completely ignores this post. I didn't think it was bad to vote with Bush 90% of the time, I thought it was the 10% against Bush that made the difference.

Some people have a hard time with the concept of change.

Unemployment up to 6.1% I see, and the stock markets down 3% last week. Biggest deficit in the history of the world.

Change does not involve giving the GOP a third consectutive term in the White House to fuck up the economy and keep us in perpetual war.

I think the reason McCain never had the favor of the GOP before is because he is willing to betray his own party for what he views as corruption. I think he and Palin are two of a kind in that regard. I think it is pretty evident in the primaries that the GOP did not want McCain to win, but the people made their voice heard and he's the only one that stands a chance against Obama.

I have always considered myself a conservative, but that doesn't mean that I don't recognize the corruption that goes with both main political parties because all the key players have "special interest" in it. I feel McCain and Palin although imperfect are as close as were going to get to a "middle ground" and I mean that by willing to go against their own party if they view something as bs. Not necessarily "middle ground" politically, although McCain is probably the closest candidtate we've had nominated by their own party that fits that description as well. Obama is as left as they get and has one of the most liberal voting records in Senate. Some people want this, but I do not want a socialist, high taxed, beaurocratic govt.

I dont like this war anymore than anybody, but after all the money and lives spent on it so far, would not finishing the job be even that much more wasteful. Some think the job will never be finished though, and I understand that, and I fear that as well. This is the only thing that worries me about McCain, but I think had we never got into this quagmire in Iraq, this election would be a landslide to McCain.

Since when does a president cast a vote for legislation?

Edit: weird formatting.

Presidents propose legislation.

yes but only signs what congress gives him. since the democrats control congress i guess they are giving Bush shit to sign. congress has a lower aproval rating than Bush. when are the democrats going to take responsibility for their share of the mess? when are the democrats going to own up to their share of the really poor aproval rating?

Quite the different tone from Sen. Obama's and the crescendo at the end was just what Sen. McCain needed.

I liked Chris Rock's speech in "Head of State" better than all the speechs. Chris for prez. A little humor.> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj0mtxXEGE8&feature=related ;)

Unemployment up to 6.1%

It was 4% in 2000. Yes it's up, no argument there. But you act like it's all Bush's fault. What's congress doing?

The stock market being down 3% is Bush's fault and that means we shouldn't vote for McCain?

The Dow was roughly 11,000 in 2000. It closed yesterday at 11,220 with a 52 week high of 14,200.
