I do agree with you, that for what ever reason (like the ones you mentioned) there is a major interest in shifting the attention of the common folks over to the new slogan of "WAR AGAINST TERRORISM". Give the people something they can focus on and make a virtual picture of a new enemy. Any violent death is a tragedy; any victim has a family and friends. 3000 people died very tragic deaths on 9/11/01; 15,000 americans died just as tragic deaths in 2001 when they were shot by other americans. It's easy to go after Bin Laden and Al Quaeda because they were a well-defined target, and were quickly identified as the responsible party. It's a lot harder to go after the people who killed the 15,000 americans last year, but just as important. No violent death is OK. Bill, we have some common ground, but I believe that we have police battling crime. Or at least trying to. What if they didn't react to a crime? And it is perceived that they are doing all they can to stop "senseless" violence. We are striving in the right direction, but that's another topic. It takes people willing to not tolerate it, good courts, good public policies and wise planners. No one would question that it's better to prevent crimes to begin with through better schools, anti-drug and drunk driving campaigns, work programs, better security etc than it is to catch criminals after they commit the crimes. We certainly have to both fight crime and terrorism, and that effort has to come from all levels of government. I hope we don't neglect one for the other. I think it is too easy to get caught up in protecting ourselves at the cost of others...American lives are not worth more than others me thinks. Now at the risk of an exponential increase in un-popularity, I find it ironic that the only country currently making express threats to another nation is the U.S, under the guise of "pre-emption". I agree that Saddam is not someone who I would trust with nukes, but if the sole purpose of this possible action is to remove weapons form dangerous leaders then perhaps the pressure needs to be applied more evenly around the globe...say Israel maybe.
