payback462 0 #4 February 21, 2003 http://www.kidzworld.com/site/p1984.htm http://www.forbes.com/2002/08/07/0807sport.html i like what the first one says about speed skiers Speed Skiing - This is the world's fastest non-motorized sport and one of the world's most dangerous sports. Skiers wear special skis and aerodynamic suits to fly down a hill at speeds up to 160 miles (250 kms) per hour. That's almost as fast as the sound barrier! One crash often means death. yeah almost as fast as the sound barrier, expept for those few extra hundred miles an hour
Zenister 0 #5 February 21, 2003 well i'm bored so lets see what i can find.. real quick? an abstract for a doctors study Annual summary of vital statistics: trends in the health of Americans during the 20th century. Guyer B; Freedman MA; Strobino DM; Sondik EJ. Pediatrics 2000; 106(6):1307-17. looks intersting, would like to find the actual paper..some other interesting things on spinal injury rates further down.. a reprint of a report from FAI/IPC Techical and Safety Subcommittee Congress Helsinki, Finland, October 1993 half way down.."Skydiving Statistics" this lists comparisons of skydiving and other sports, but its old numbers wow. the total control site above has an impressive collection of skydiving info.i could be here a while still looking.... i think these may be for Switzerland only but..http://www.bfu.ch/english/statistics/2002/ this has a good breakdown, but again only for Switzerland..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. sinker 0 #6 February 21, 2003 It's been a long time, but I thought I read in Poynter's Parachuting book that statistically it is more dangerous to drive on the freeway and to participate in water sports (i.e. water skiing, scuba, etc). Can anyone back these up, especially w/ sound analyses of the actual injury/death numbers? A reference to an actual article would be great. sinker -the artist formerly known as sinker

Until I do, I just can't believe it. Then again, I've never really had a close call skydiving, but I've been in two accidents (one serious) on the way to or from the dropzone. riddler 0 #8 February 22, 2003 QuoteAny insight from the peanut gallery? I think mine are dry-roasted and unsalted. Can't comment on the water sports, although, like many skydivers, I like to SCUBA as well. Seems I recall an issue of Parachutist a few months back that said the risk of death is the same for 17 skydives as driving 10,000 miles in a car.Trapped on the surface of a sphere.
