Neptune Altimeter walked away

Recommended Posts

I think posting this publicly may ensure that I never get it back, but what the heck.

The final Saturday in Rantoul my Altimaster Neptune decided to take a stroll, without me. It was sitting loose in my helmet, which was in my golf cart, which was never more than 10 feet from me (probably more like 5) near the manifest trailer. Paid Michael for 3 closing pin necklaces, turned around, gone! I still have the helmet though, along with the old style Dytter inside it.

Anyway, if any of you see someone with a used Neptune they got at Rantoul "cheap", please investigate deeper.

It's a standard black Neptune on a hand mount with the old style (BIG) rubber ring.

Identifying mark? Being a field support member, I have the ability to make things look a bit different. This particular one, right before Ranoul, developed a crack in the battery cover (from me tightening it too much). I replaced it as prep for the wFFC, then decided to change it.

I took the new black cover off the black Neptune, and replaced it with a hot pink one.

So, if you see a Neptune with a hot pink battery cover, and obviously painted cover, no cover, or maybe even tape covering that side up, please find out the serial number. If it's on the wrist strap, the only easy way to get the number is to go into demo mode.

Thanks all. I'd just say the heck with it, and get a new one, but starting college in 2 weeks has tapped the resources. :(

Just remember how karma works. For the person who took the Neptune, karma will get them.

Hope it shows up.

the firmware knows the serial #? Wonder if Alti2 could be talked into having their updater software check against a stolen ID list and turn the unit into a boat anchor. Probably too hard to do without friendly fire, but a nice thought.

At 5000ft it displays - you thieving son of a bitch!

No, better than calling someone a thief, a picture of Newman from Seinfeld waiving a finger like in Jurassic Park

That's actually funny.

What comes around, goes around. This was updated with pre-release beta software. As I posted to another forum, is it bad form to actually wish for beta software to fail? [:/]

As field support, we accept that beta may not function as expected. If we can't accept that, we don't jump it.
I accepted it, but the new person "in possesion" (NOT owner) wouldn't have a clue....

Karma is as Karma does. It goes a long way when you welcome people and help them out. Neptunes obviously don't grow legs. If you see it, convince whoever's got it to return it. If you want to ship it to me first and I'll pass it back to the Rev, let me know and I'll pass on my FedEx number to pay for the shipping. No questions asked.
Remember, we're a small family in the whole grand scheme of things. If it's out there, it will appear at some point. What's the story going to be then?

As you can see I'm new to skydiving. Is this kind of thing common at dropzones? Is it more just a problem at big boogies? After breaking the bank on equipment do I have to watch it every second? I guess there are bad apples in every bunch, but you'd think the cost of this sport would weed out most of them. Not familiar with the neptune, can you see the pink battery cover when someones wearing it.
LOW LIFE BASTARDS

Will be watching for it in Eloy,

I am new like you, but I am seeing and hearing about it more and more. With me having a new Z1 helmet, a neptune, and a 375$ tony suit I am about to invest in a gear bag that locks for in between jumps. It sucks that such a small group of people has a problem like this, but karma is on our side for a person that steals.

It's not 'common'. Your stuff could walk away just about anywhere. It's probably more prevalent at larger boogies since more people are around. Make sure you keep a list of all of your equipment - serial numbers and such - just in case. Just like with anything else, if someone wants your stuff, they're going to get it. Just beat the crap out of them if you catch them. :S

I guess you just can't trust humane nature any more. A good old fashion ass whooping sounds like a plan. Make that a stick beating for good measure. This is a good reason to ask people of questionable values about new used gear they show up with. If its legit they will probably be interested in talking about their new toys. I'm currently looking for some used gear what's the best way to make sure I don't make it profitable for some crook?

I have my suspicions about a certain Illinois plated rv that I saw at the WFFC. Certain things walked on that last day, and it stinks. People come with an expectation that this is FAMILY and we WATCH out for each other, not STEAL from each other. I am adding to this thread so it gets a bump.
Rev Jim, I hate to say it, but I hope the bastard who stole it reads the thing wrong.......

Yes, watch your gear. Gear theft tends to happen more at boogies because it's easier for unfamiliar faces to blend in, but I know of at least one bad apple that's caused a lot of grief who moved around from DZ to DZ in SE Florida.

Anything you own that's small and expensive can be easily swiped. You don't need to be paranoid about it, but try not to leave that kind of stuff out in the open unattended.

Yeah, like the Sony digital Handicam I inherited from my mom, which I'd probably be flying by this point? That "took a walk" from Skydive SoBe back at the end of last year, and never came back. It was suggested that someone associated with a tandem passenger made off with it. No charger, no manual... just two batteries, the camera, a couple of memory sticks and some tapes. >:( I hope it's used by some thugs who videotape their crimes, and the police use it as evidence in their prosecution. :D
(Some people are dumb enough to do that, you know!)

It had beta software. He/She/It may not even need to read it wrong, it just might be wrong....

Anyway, a little bump from me, saying I dug out the serial number.

Yes, it's one of the original first run batch. Kinda some sentimental value there.

That and I'm too broke to buy another one.

Jumping season is winding down soon up here anyway, and college is starting very soon. I'm sure I'll have another (or this one) back, by spring.
