Snowbird 0 #80 September 2, 2004 Quotemartial arts is not about fighting it is about confidence, it is about control, its about tradition, its about RESPECT Yup. What they said. This thread is making me want to find a new dojo, get back in the mix. My preferred dojo closed awhile back, haven't trained since then and I MISS it! Whatever you decide to do, enjoy! The time I've spent training is some of the best ever. I learned so much from training, and not all of it was about self-defence. Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. -Robert A. Heinlein

tunaplanet 0 #84 September 2, 2004 QuoteLOL. Do you explain these rules to the people who attack you on the street or in a bar? Of course not. Those rules are designed to help the non-grappler. When I'm in the guard, mount, side mount, etc... I am always positioned to not be prone to being bit, eye-gouged or fish-hooked. The fact is anyone whose in the know about martial arts will tell you grapplers dominate fights. Oh, another misconception I've seen from those "knowledgable" about fighting is that Royce Gracie and other BJJ stylists are "slow." By slow they are referring to not speed but the amount of time it takes to beat an opponent. This is such a misconception. THe opponents the Gracies fight in these NHB/MMA tournaments are world-class martial artists. It does take some time to defeat some of these fighters. In the real world, however, 99% of the bums you encounter are not anywhere near the skill of those fighters. Most opponents encountered by a BJJ stylist on the streets can easily be defeated in less than 15 seconds. There are many submissions that we practice that are based for stand-up aggression. When I was into it, my sifu was into the Ultimate Wrestling thing and we'd spar with some of the guys he knew about once every two weeks or so. I only busted a couple of ribs that way but it taught me that while classic martial arts is a great tool for disciplining the mind and body -- it just isn't the best thing when it comes to the street.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
