This whole OE measurement system was probably a product of too much free time and a gloomy disposition. The Brits are depressed about being weathered in for 10 months of the year. Britan, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and many other countries, converted to metric a long time ago from the Imperial (British) system and the US made noises about doing it at the same time. However, just like many other international agreements, you guys decided not to bother carrying through cause it would cost bussiness to much money. In the mean time the rest of the world has moved on to the much more sensible metric system.
