Gateway or Dell....they got their shit together.

I love my Dell laptop (and that comes from a big Mac fan) but I'm not very happy with their customer support right now.

I don't suppose it matters about the specific problem I ran into, although anyone who purchases "Office" preinstalled needs to know that if you try to "Detect and Repair" problems, it won't work until you do a full uninstall/reinstall of the programs. You'll get Error 1311 (file not found), and Dell will try to bs you about what the problem is. Still, the solution they offer is the only answer until they start loading the damn computers with the same software they ship.

But tech support logged off on me twice in chat and left me hanging on the phone for thirty minutes. In the interim, I googled and found the fix for the original problem (the "News" menu item totally disappeared from Outlook after I installed it in the "Go" menu), but in the end, I had to google for the above error code as well.

All I can say is that it pays to fix small things oneself, because I wasted more than a couple of hours trying to get them to help me. I did, however, find some good tips for dealing with Dell on the "This is True" website, and I intend to send my complaints about the service I received on to Dell to let them know I'm unhappy.

I have always had IBMs, not sexy but functional and I punish mine with travel. Sound could be better for music in the hotels.......but then mine are free so I don't complain too much.

I too have an Inspiron 9300. This thing is HUGE.
I got it just to have it at home, but now that I'll be going back to school, I wish I had something a little smaller like my old IBM Thinkpad

If you're notgoing to travel with it, then the 9300 is really nice.

You know what? I hate to admit it, but since Mac started using basically a Unix based OS you really should stay away from anything else. Would you rather run an OS that was designed for multi users running multi apps, or one that was originally designed to look good.
