ACMESkydiver 0 #1 May 13, 2006 We all hear words all of the time that we are almost sure we know the meaning of. We can infer what it means through its use in speech or writing, but maybe we wouldn't be confident enough to use it ourselves. That's a tragedy! I've lost so much of my vocabulary over the past 6 years or so...I don't even recognize my own writing sometimes. So here's my first contribution to the 'Words you thought you knew the meaning to but were too embarrassed to ask' thread: mon·i·ker or mon·ick·er ( P ) Pronunciation Key (mn-kr) n. Slang A personal name or nickname. Her given name is 'Jennifer', but everyone knows her by her moniker, 'Jaye'. What did I used to think that 'moniker' meant? I thought it was the 'Mr./Mrs./Miss/Ms.' Ok your turn. Post something to help me sound like the intelligent woman I used to be!~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. ACMESkydiver 0 #2 May 13, 2006 Here's another one: sym·po·si·um ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sm-pz-m) n. pl. sym·po·si·ums or sym·po·si·a (-z-) 1.) A meeting or conference for discussion of a topic, especially one in which the participants form an audience and make presentations. 2.) A collection of writings on a particular topic, as in a magazine. 3.) A convivial meeting for drinking, music, and intellectual discussion among the ancient Greeks. Note the last one!! Woo-hoo, skydivers around a bonfire are emulating ancient Greeks. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.

Snowwhite 0 #14 May 13, 2006 I asked a 6'3" boss a question one time, and he responded by saying "hang on a sec, I need to sit down and AUGMENT myself" I was about 15 years old, and I asked him if he knew what AUGMENT meant. He looked at me kind of shocked and said "no, what?" So I explained that one definition would be "to increase or add to" He never used that word again.skydiveTaylorville.org [email protected]
