The use of "NSFW"

Recommended Posts

Recent posts I have seen have got me thinking, along with posts I have seen in the past about the use of "NSFW."

I mean, give me a break! You are at work goofing off on the computer on Dropzone.com, and you come upon an attachment that is posted in the Bonfire. So, you open it because it looks fine and it was not labelled "NSFW." Then a naked chick pops up on your screen and you get mad because it wasn't "properly" labelled "NSFW" to warn you?

I think it is hilarious to see people post crap about someone not labelling a pic "NSFW." Give me a break! If you are looking at DZ.com at work and decide to open an attachment, is it really the job of each poster to make sure you are only looking at non-work related things that are "safe for your work?"

Maybe those who complain about something not labelled "NSFW" should police themselves. If you are going to play on DZ.com at work, and actually make the choice to open a picture on your work computer, then don't get mad if you open something "NSFW."

YOU are playing on the computer at work. YOU are making the choices to open shit that you might not want others to see on your screen. YOU are taking the risk at work. Don't complain to US about keeping "NSFW" attachments off your screen. It isn't our job!

No, it's not our job to do it, we do it because it's a nice thing to do for friends.

And as far as the argument that people who post at work are somehow already doing something wrong, that's a bunch of crap. Many of us posts at lunch, and many of us have incidental use policies at work. I for one am not doing anything wrong by posting at work. However, if I open a graphic attachment, I suddenly am doing something wrong.

So then why would you open something if you weren't sure what it was?

Is it because you trust this site and everyone on it so much that if it doesnt say NSFW than it must be SFW? Sounds kind of fucking foolish to me.

Some businesses do not prevent a person from surfing the net at work. Most businesses, however, would have rules against pornography, nudity, foul language, etc. This means that if a boss decides to look at the web history and finds some images that are to his/her disliking, i.e., a woman depicted as a butcher's map, then that person may face some consequences.

So, NSFW is put there to warm people that some businesses may find this to be objectionable. For example, let's say I'm reading dz.com. No problem. But if I download that picture and it shows up on the screen while a less-than-thick-skinned employee walks by, wel, then, there may be a sexual harassment problem.

So it just makes a nice and courteous warning to people. What the hell is wrong with typing 4 measley letters?

It's not a black and white thing, Dan.

Exactly my point!

If it is labelled "NSFW," then great. If it is not, but YOU decide to open it anyway, assuming it MUST be "SFW" because it was not labelled otherwise, then YOU are the idiot. Opening shit at work that you are unsure of is stupid and is YOUR fault.

No one is REQUIRED to use NSFW. It's polite.

No one is required to say "Good Morning" to you, either. (How the f&*k do they know it's a good morning, dammit??!! Maybe it's a shitty morning! Is it supposed to be a good morning just because they say it is???!!)

but some people choose to say "good morning" because they believe it's a polite & friendly thing to do.

Generally I don't. And in fact you can look at my history, I've never called someone out for not putting a label on it. The point that everyone is responsible for everything they open is valid.

However, you two are coming off as if to say that the NSFW label is altogether ridiculous (the "it's not my job" argument). My only point was that it may not be your job, but it is a nice thing to do for people. After all, we're all friends here. Well, most of us. Ok, some of us.

You guys are all missing the point. I know all the crap about being able to surf the web and blah blah blah. The point is that people open an attachment that they are unsure of just because it is not labelled NSFW, then get mad if it is something they shouldn't have opened.

It is about opening something you are not sure of and NOT about the "rules" of surfing the web at work.

Because it is about each individual making the choice to do stuff on the computer at work. If you are going to surf the web at work, but can't bring certain things up on your screen, then don't rely on a "NSFW" tag, and don't open something you aren't sure of just because it isn't labelled.

Won't let em get the best of me
Wo wo wo wo

Gimme a break the game is survival
Gimme a break and plan my arrival
Gimme a break for heaven's sake
to my piece of the cake

Gimme a break
Gimme a break

Oh, I understand that. And for people who follow-up post by stating "NSFW" then the warning is there.

I agree with you in principle - you shouldn't HAVE to put NSFW on it, but it's nice if you do.

NSFW labels serve a very useful purpose.

NSFW labels enable us to find the good stuff immediately without having to open countless threads about "vibes", song lyrics, pets, problems with Windows XP, skin diseases...

Then don't open stuff you are not sure of. This is about people opening something that is not labelled NSFW. If it is not labelled, and you chose to assume it is ok just because of that, then it is your fault.

This is not about proper labelling procedures, or whether it helps to know. It is about people complaining if they open something they were not sure of and then find something on their screen that shouldn't be.
