...But "maillon" is the French word for a link of a chain.

I'm no Etymologist but maillon makes sense considering chain mail armor used in the old days.
My reality and yours are quite different.

So they're speed links?? :o

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Not really ....
US Navy "Speed" Links are a vastly different breed with little screws, sliding gates, etc.
According to the military manual, Speed Links must be installed with little red rubber covers. In all my years of rigging, I have seen ONE set of red rubber covers. So, if you cannot install them in accordance with the military manual, you cannot install them at all.
US Navy Speed Links fell out of fashion - with civilians - twenty-plus years ago.

Sparky,

NOPE: that does not have the 'sliding gate' that Rob mentions.

The Navy speed link used one little screw and, the now famous, sliding gate.

If I knew how to use a computer I would post a photo.

Are you sure? :):)

Nope that IS a speed link.:P You can see the ridges on the sides of the sliding gate and the head of the central screw.

And I've seen one set of red rubber covers too.

Terry,

Jerry was right, I edited the link. The first one I put up was of a 1" link.:)

Sparky,

I could not open your attachment.

But for those who want to know, the Speed Link is item # H361 in the Para-Gear catalog. However, it is not a very good picture.

As I recall, the problem with the Speed Link was not with the removable end (except that small screw kept getting boogered-up) but with forging cracks down in the inside of the 'U', the other end of the link. This would result in catastrophic failure.
