What is the reasoning behind locking a thread vs deleting it?

Recommended Posts

locking it will set an example of 'hey, guys, don't do this' as apposed to it disappearing before anyone else sees what not to post? just a guess. Or, they like to tease. Or , the first several posts are ok, then people turn it to the worst, so they want to leave the good information. ?

Just to piss you off :D:D

This is why:

Bandwidth and Performance Saving
Threads that have more than 1,000 posts or 10,000 views may be locked to maintain optimal system performance and preserve bandwidth. When this is done it will be indicated as such and you're welcome to start a similar discussion again. Posts made with the explicit goal of soliciting multiple short responses (“Post Whoring”) may be locked or removed to preserve bandwidth.

Just curious. Shit just doesnt seem to make sense.

My assessment:

Locked: Posted something stupid and it should be kept as exhibit A
Deleted: Posted something stupid and it's not even worth preserving

I will admit that sometimes I lock a thread vs deleting it so it can be re-referenced by others and can stand as an example of a particular person's stupidity.

Is that mean?

I would suggest to PM a mod and talk with them about it. Cause more than likely they will lock this or remove it.

Why would they lock or remove this?

I doubt we would unless you've only made this thread in response to being locked or deleted.

Simply complaining about moderator actions is also against the rules... Read up on them. Rules are located at the right end of the light gray menu bar next to "Who's Online"

What are you a junior moderator in training or something?

Just asking for clarification on the reasoning.

:D:D:D:D:D:D sorry that's just hysterical...Billy a mod...you obviously are new. If only you knew how many times Billy has been baned for a month or so at a time. Trust him...he knows the rules...and even moreso he knows how to entertain us quite well. ;)

Some threads are deleted because there is no reason for them to be in the forums in the first place. For example, something labled "The most disturbing video in the history of the internet" really has no value to this site. A thread such as that really does not meet the standard that Sangiro and the new owners are trying to withold on dz.com. It's also the reason why porn will get deleted. If someone is upset about not being able to see that link, they can just Google it.
