Florida cops...

How strict are they on speeding? I assume they aren't jerks that will give me a ticket for going 5 over. But like on the highways (not knowing the speed limit) what can I get away with? 15 over? 20 over? maybe 30?

My few encounters with them, the State Troopers are d**ks. Beat the guy in court though.

The problem is this, if your state shares points with Florida, then beware, Florida likes to heap them on. I was facing 73 in a 55, and FOUR points...I was NOT going to let that happen!! ;)

One other time, an Okeechobee County Sheriff pulled me over...big fat guy with a nail in his tire and equally arrogant...

Mind you, this was 10 years ago. So, YMMV...

interesting...
I've always thought that this IS very similar to a parachuting incident...it's not the speeding that usually kills, the events leading up to it do.
Changing lanes without looking, wheelies, cutting between cars, overall poor judgment....the speeding is just a portion of the end result.

Are radar detectors legal?
Yes! Radar detectors are completely legal to use in non-commercial vehicles in 49 states. Virginia and Washington DC are the only places in the United States that currently ban radar detectors. Radar detector use in commercial vehicles has been prohibited in the U.S. since 1995 and radar detectors are also illegal in most Canadian provinces. We do not track detector regulations in other countries.

I personally recommend the Escort line of products.

Kind of related: Anyone know if any of the east coasts states prohibit radar detectors?

Thanks

There are some, PA I think is 1. However, the whole point of a radar detector is that you don't get pulled-over to begin with. My only advice is go out & spend the $400-$500 on a good 1; something that will jam the cops radar gun - not just detect it & warn you.

Choppers though, that'll still be a problem...

Those are illegal. In every state as far as I know. I think that it is a federal regulation that radar detectors 'cannot interfere with the operation of a radar gun.' (paraphrasing of course)

shit, for being illegal, they sure are quite widely available - I'm almost positive I saw a few at Best Buy on multiple occassions.

I don't have the need for 1, as I no longer drive like I used to; hell, I don't remember the last time I was pulled over.......oh yeah I do.....I was on my way to a party at the dz last year. I can't believe he pulled me over for going 10 over, on a rural empty road...

Anyway, for curiosity's sake - what's the penalty for being caught with a jammer?

Damn Dave - lighten up, maybe you need to find a new line of work?

You don't know me in person, do you? I'm being very direct and firm on the internet to get a point across. I'm very happy with my line of work and am happy at work.

Maybe you should understand that this is the internet and much of the message is lost since its not interpersonal contact?

As for the radar detector discussion above...spend your money if you'd like, you'd be better off saving the money to pay for your ticket.;)

Cops are actually not too bad in Florida... however, the budget shortage has a direct impact on their goals... just don't become one of their goals....

Explain a good reason why you think you should be traveling 30mph over. Also list all the professional driving training you have received that makes you capable of handling a vehicle at 30mph over on the highway (which would make your speed 100mph).

Chances are you'll end up just like the other dead bodies I've had to cut out of cars. Thanks a lot asshole, I'm glad you enjoyed being an idiot and going 30mph over the limit. I hope you have good insurance to pay out to the family you just wrecked out into, killing their mother and their only son.

This has to be, by and far, one of the best examples of being a complete self centered asshole I've seen in Bonfire in a long damned time. You must only be 18-21yrs old if you think that traveling 100mph on the high way is either safe or a good thing to do.

+1 :D:D:D:D
