You would not be the first skydiver who financed getting started by packing... ESPECIALLY at a DZ that seems to have a "few" tandems passing thru. If you show an interest in learning.. you might just be surprised... BUT it all depends on the vibe of the place. You do not know till you try. You also might try Channel Islands Harbor... .. I spent some time in a boat yard there prepping a boat to sail up the coast. I bought it there and boat owners hire people to sand, paint... might be a way to pick up some money too especially as people haul the boats at the end and beginning of the season. When I first moved to Seattle (the first time I'd moved anywhere where I knew almost no one) I volunteered, joined alumni clubs for my college and grad school, and got to know a lot of people that way. I had a rule - for the first year there I wasn't allowed to turn down any social invitations, so even if it meant tagging along to a party where I'd only know one person, or going to an alumni event where I wouldn't know anyone, I'd go because it was a chance to meet people.
