Downgrading desk at work. :-(

Recommended Posts

One of the things I love most about my job is my desk. I have a nice, wide "corner desk" that separates me and a really hot PM. Sort of like a cubicle, but with tons of space, right up next to a window. The window overlooks a river, mountains, trees, and a hot tub where very beautiful people go take a sit in the winter after a long day of skiing. If I open the window, I can hear birds, other critters, and the roaring river down below.

A few weeks ago, we were told "great news" about moving upstairs 1 floor, to an office space that is being remodeled. What they mean is, they're painting. My coworkers (who also have similar desks currently) and I all thought, "damn, we like our desks now." Well, we just got our seating arrangements worked out upstairs. 2 of us will be seated by windows. The rest of us are moving to smaller desks without windows / sunlight. We will no longer have a wall / cubicle to hang items up in order to save space, so some office supplies will have to go. That's not too big of a deal, but having a window to open and get fresh air was one of the perks of this job. I guess the biggest bummer of all is not having a view of the hot tub anymore. I can't perv on hot guys relaxing while I should be writing software. Some of those guys gave me inspiration! (Yeah, we'll call it "inspiration.")

First world problems suck. :D

It's funny when I think back. My first job out of college (1992), I had my own office. My first job out of grad school (1997) I had my own office. Even though I've moved into more senior positions, I haven't had my own office since. The companies I've worked for have moved towards open floor plans, collaborative environments, hoteling/shared office space, or I've been at client sites where you get shoved in an empty conference room.

For my current job, I used to work in a cube in an office that was a mile from my apartment in a downtown area, so I'd walk to work and go in pretty regularly. Then they moved my office cube 27 miles away into the burbs to one of those soul-sucking suburban office parks where you have to get in your car to go anywhere off-campus. It's a more modern facility but that's about all it has going for it.

With gas at $4/gallon (or the BART ride being $8/RT and more than doubling my commute time), I'm taking full advantage of the flexibility to telecommute. Most of my work is on the phone/Webex anyway, and it's just as easy to do it from my home office as my "real" office. And I can open windows here.B|

My coworkers joke when I do come into the office "So, you need to turn in an expense report?" They're pretty much right... that's about the only time I go in. :D

There's this thing called email....
Scan in your sig and attach it to the spreadsheets and you're set.
;)

Yes, I would do that if only I worked at a company that, when it totally replaced its expense reporting system 2 years ago, offered attaching scanned images as an option. Instead, they went with a system (or a configuration thereof) that still requires that we FAX the receipts (which get attached to said expense reports anyway - but there is no way to attach the scanned receipts directly). So I go into the office to use the fax machine there. And flip the calendar on my desk to a new month. :D

It's wee todd did, I know. [:/]

My big problem? The Teriyaki Chicken in the cafeteria isn't as good as the Teriyaki two blocks down the street. If I want good T. Chicken, I have to get in my car and drive there. Sheeesh! The troubles I've seen. . . .:S

You can't walk two blocks? That *does* sound like a first world problem! ;) (Especially if it's one of those two block stretches with no sidewalks and four lanes of traffic trying to kill ya).

I've worked from home a few times, but my current desk at work is much nicer than my desk at home. I only live half a block away from work, but I may find myself working from home more often now. At least at home, my dog can lay at my feet and keep them warm, haha. It's nice to be able to chat with coworkers when they're at their desks to discuss a problem, but it's almost as easy to do that via IM / email these days.

I'm a dude. No harm in looking as long as they don't see me, thus making them uncomfortable, right? :D

You have to drive there?! Can't they deliver? Why would they expect someone to go to them?! This is Amurrika!

Two lane highway down the street from a Casino, skinny shoulders, no sidewalks, lots of drunks. I can't tell you how many fatal accidents have happened just outside our company gate over the years. :S

I've walked it some, but man, my head is on a swivel. :D

Yeah, I was gonna give you grief for being a lazy American, but I know you're not and I had a vague recollection of the terrain from my visit there a few years back. :D

:DWhy not? I'm sure not every woman I've looked at was really that thrilled to be the object of my lustful thoughts. :D

Besides, it's nice to be admired, even if it's not the right person.;)

So EVERY woman you've looked at has become the object of your lustful thoughts?

Interesting... can you teach shah to do that?

My office desk is one I saved from a storage room some 16 years ago. Motorola had donated a load of used furniture, mostly junk, to the school (no doubt for a big tax write-off), including a huge, beautiful desk that had belonged to the founder of the company.

On my last office move we went from having private offices with sunlight to one big loud open space where conference rooms and executive offices go the sunlight.

It was next door to the golf course.

why cant you fax it from your computer, scan in the Rcpt. and fax them from your "office" or other WP software, most have a fax facility now.

I'm not traveling very often, and when I'm traveling a lot, I just fax the previous report when I'm in the out-of-town office on the subsequent trip. It's not worth getting either a land line or an efax account for something I have to do once every couple of months.

If I really gave a fuck I could go to the local copy shop to fax it. It's an excuse to make an appearance in the office, and I was more commenting on some of the silly choices my corporate IT department (of which I am a part!) sometimes makes, than presenting a problem for dizzy to solve for me. :D
