kallend 1,623 #1 December 17, 2016 From the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk to Yeager in the X1 - 44 years. From the X1 to the Apollo 11 Moon landing - 22 years X1 to commercial supersonic travel in Concorde - 29 years. From the last Apollo mission to today - 44 years. And today we need Russian rockets to get our astronauts to the ISS. WTF!... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
JohnMitchell 14 #2 December 17, 2016 Sad indeed. I love the story of the Wright Brothers, and, with the help of their sister, their quest to solve the problems of flight. One author I read posited that the problems of flight were so numerous that perhaps only a pair of focused siblings, living and learning together, was sufficient to crack the code. muff528 3 #5 December 18, 2016 kallend ....... And today we need Russian rockets to get our astronauts to the ISS. WTF! What's better than having a rocket? Having a friend with a rocket! Oh, wait! ....I mean "boat", not "rocket"!
gowlerk 1,912 #6 December 18, 2016 I guess that would be a pointless argument. So sure, flight can happen in a vacuum. The days of big space spending by the government are over for now. Space exploration will have to pay it's costs to advance, unless the military needs it. The Wright brothers did not have taxpayer support, and Elon Musk is trying to do as much as possible without it as well. But advances in atmospheric flight are being made all the time. It's getting cheaper, more efficient, and safer. The future is still bright.Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. billeisele 122 #10 December 18, 2016 100 jumpers into Kitty Hawk for the 100th anniversary, that's all that matters somehow all the jumpers and ground crew made it thru security with Bush and many others in attendance, the metal detectors were singing, after the first 3 jumpers with rigs some big dude in a black suit, ear bud and dark glasses waved us around security still don't know how everyone made it past the sniffing dogsGive one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.

The Wright brothers were from Ohio. And as someone that grew up in Ohio I'm bemused by that license plate as well. Two guys with a bicycle shop in Ohio did what many failed to accomplish and a state with a windy hill tries to take credit for. Other people from Ohio. First American is space... John Glenn. First man on the moon... Neil Armstrong. A lot of "the right stuff" but also humility in those two people.
