Canopy control courses?!?!?!
Quagmirian replied to baRRRpirate's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Slow down, you'll kill yourself. -
Thanks, I'll take that onboard and go back on the static line. Someone please delete this thread, please.

Best place to pick up an optimum 143
Quagmirian replied to texnavalaviator's topic in Gear and Rigging
This is very much the 'Dropzone' solution to all problems. -
Oh you!

Traditionally, nine cells and seven cells do have the characteristics described above. Compare the original PD 7 and 9 cells, for example. Nowadays, different design techniques mean canopies are very varied. The PD Spectre, for example, a 7 cell, has a flatter glide than the PD Sabre 2, a 9 cell.

Packing for shorter snivel/faster opening?
Quagmirian replied to lepidoctora's topic in Gear and Rigging
I have never once rolled the nose on any packjob, only the tail. I have never had long openings either, about 500 feet at a guess. -

"Must have been a very windy day." Yes, it was so windy that it was winding upwards!

Biggest fads in skydiving...

Everyone knows that military gear is cooler. -
I have the dream where I pull excedingly low, hit the ground hard, stand up and think, 'damn, I'm going to get in so much trouble for this'.

Apologies for me sticking my hypothetical oar in, but is there any point where a bigger canopy makes things more difficult? I would say that I found it more difficult to time the flare on a Manta or Skymaster 290 loaded at 0.55 than I did a Balance 210 loaded at 0.76. Are there any skills which are easier to learn on a smaller canopy?

Found a $50 bill on the floor in Winco this morning
Quagmirian replied to 1969912's topic in The Bonfire
I found a £5 note on the floor of the toilets in a hospital when I was younger. My sister made me hand it in to the desk, but felt bad about it afterwards. Now if I find any money, I pick it up and keep it unless someone I see has obviously dropped it. -
From page 42 of the BPA's canopy handling manual: There does seem to be an alarming practice within the sport called “taking wraps” in the steering lines. Essentially, this means wrapping the steering lines around your hands to shorten them and thus allowing the canopy to stall. We would suggest that this is an inherently dangerous technique that should not be used due to the possibility of being unable to disentangle your hands should the need to cutaway or any other occasion arise where you need to let go of the steering toggles. If you do seem to have an inordinate amount of bow in your steering lines, it is acceptable to take your hands out of the steering toggles and move your grip upwards to the point where the steering toggles are attached to the steering lines i.e. so that the steering line goes between your fingers with your grip being at the top of the steering toggle. This is the BPA's advice, not the USPA's. If you're interested, you read the whole thing online here

I don't think the term 'nigger' is appropriate when describing these people.

I'm siding with rss_v in this thread. He's come under a lot of fire for posting a hypothetical question.

Awesome Jack, I KNOW WHO YOU ARE TOO.

I don't wish to patronise, but are you sure the slider's all the way up against the stops?

If no one saw you, then it's not a crime is it?

I thought this thread was going to be about the attraction you get to your instructor in the plane. I've had that lots of times. I though it was well documented, but oh well. I don't think there's anything wrong with a genuine attraction between OP and his/her instructor, and it's nothing that a massive experience gap would stop.

It's unfortunate that I have seen many replies as abrasive, and I'm sorry, I didn't come into this forum to act like an arse. I have no large ego. Nobody is holding me back, and people with true experience really do know better. It's a shame that so many people now believe that I'm one of these reckless young people who will die by downsizing too fast and hooking it in. I apologize for my previous posts but I don't think I made my point properly. Oh well, it's not the end of the world that I didn't win an internet argument.

Reading through this thread, there seems to be a number of people who think I want to be swooping now. It's all very well telling me to listen to advice, but I'm not going to listen to people who won't even read my posts first, sorry. These are very much the reactions I would have expected in a 'look at me I'm really good at swooping' thread. Telling me I'm going to kill myself if I continue jumping a Triathlon 210 doesn't really make sense either.

What have I done that was a rush? What do I need to slow down?
