  1. I read Zooey Deschanel does not like to be called "quirky", but you can call me quirky. I am. A creature of convenience and conviction, it is too much trouble for me to buy the sort of goat cheese I would be OK with eating often. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  2. You know, I do, but I do not eat it a lot. We do not eat a lot of soy. I used to drink soy milk, but switched to almond milk several years ago. I had a great friend in high school that I roomed with in college who was half-Asian and I literally would give her more than half my grocery budget every week so she would cook for me. She cooked mostly Asian (I LOVE Asian flavors) and used to do amazing things with tofu and veggies and noodles and yum, yum, yum! I have no idea what she did, though, except to note the ingredients. I really do not like cooking and was happy to pay her to cook for me. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  3. You ignored my post I want attention!!! I was asking if anyone else thinks shiitake mushrooms taste "buttery" (without doing anything to them). They taste "buttery" to me in the same way certain varieties of wild-Pacific salmon do (again, without doing anything to it). I love shiitakes. 4. Yes. Yes. Yes! I LOVE portabella mushroom "burgers" with everything you said.
  5. Oooo! Though I love goat cheese, without it, that sounds right up my alley! I was just about to edit that I think we use red wine vinegar in the balsamic reduction, but I am not sure. I make the salsa fresca, but my honey prepares the more labor-intensive stove/oven stuff. I am more likely to peel an avocado, slice it and eat it because I am hungry, love avocados and do not feel like preparing anything beyond that. I like snacking on the shiitake mushrooms by themselves, too; I prefer them that way. They have a "buttery" taste to me when they are just cleaned and eaten as they are. Anyone else? 6. Especially beets, and it seems most people I talk to cannot remember the last time they ate beets. So, I offer up a recipe for one of my favorite snacks for the upcoming beet season: Roasted Beets and Arugula with a Balsamic Reduction 36 baby red beets (or approximate # of large beets) 4 cups arugula leaves 3 cups vegetable broth (we use organic Swanson's) 2 tablespoons chopped dried shiitake mushrooms 2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary 1 large garlic clove, chopped 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar Splash of olive oil Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper Preparation: Beets: Scrub beets thoroughly; remove greens. Drizzle lightly with olive oil, place in roasting pan and bake, covered with foil, at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Rub the skins off beets with a towel and slice. Balsamic Reduction: Combine broth, mushrooms, rosemary and garlic in a saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil. Cook over high heat 15 to 20 minutes oruntil reduced by half. Stir in vinegar. Cook 10 minutes or until mixture has reduced to about 1/2 cup and has the consistnecy of a light sauce. Remove form heat, strain sauce through a fine-mesh strainer and return to pan. Whisk in olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. (Note: If making ahaed, warm gently and whisk in olive oil before serving, though I like it cold) Combine beets and arugula, plate, and top with desired amount of balsamic reduction. SO good.
  7. On a similar note for me, however, I grew up with said thoughtful, 2nd Amendment advocates. The discussions taught me to distinguish between thoughtful “more gun control” advocates and those who think anyone supporting the 2nd amendement is an evil righty. Among my friends, gun ownership is 50/50. I enjoy the discussions here when it is debate, not personal. I should note, however, until recently I had never owned a gun personally. I was always ambivalent on the idea. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  8. +1 and also on Champu's recommendation to check out B&H. Have fun!
  9. For all I know you do not even own a pair of yoga pants and set up a false scenario. Or, I was wrong to think you might like yoga having stated you wear yoga pants. I am not always right. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  10. Not into yoga, but likes the pants. Are you big &/or tall? I did not_see_anyone wearing a coat & tie and yoga pants at jury duty, so it would be tough to make any other assesment based on stated attire alone. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  11. Actually, I have. But, wearing a coat & tie to yoga class would be as appropriate as my yoga clothes to jury duty, though I am pretty sure if it fancied me, a coat & tie would not restrict me in any way from touching my nose to my knees and beyond. Edit: Technically the summons did not mention pants for the man, so I am thinking your yoga pants and a coat & tie would really be a bold statement of self-expression, and at least everyone would still know you like yoga. 12. On a similar note, I can relate. I was the prude, though. Thank God for self-pleasure.
  13. Having been bored with the clothing conversation for some time, I will leave it now with one suggestion: Since so many people are very passionate about their reluctance to comply with any sort of attire requirement for jury duty, write your congressmen and point out this injustice and rally for change. It is nothing less than I do when I am upset with the current state of affairs for something that matters to me. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  14. As previously stated, because you were asked to in return for the many privileges of living in America. Clearly it is an instruction that is very upsetting to a lot of posters here and thus they have decided if it is not important to them, then who cares? Like you, I do not wear such attire to work, and I would not be paid anything at all in county. I figure if it is written there, in bold, then I can suck it up for one day and comply with what was instructed to me. I would hope if one were to invest in just one dress, pants suit or coat & tie they would opt for a comfortable one. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  15. See, a Hawaiian shirt might have been funny to me in that scenario and at least it has a collar. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  16. No snarky remarks, here. Two of the five charitable organizations I support are working toward the same goal. They can always count on my checks and due diligence to garner whatever support I can for the cause. It is so important we all support matters close to our hearts and not judge others for supporting theirs instead of ours. If we all supported the same thing, little else would be accomplished. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  17. Nope; it says "unavailable" and thus would only help solidify pyro's claims that nothing is accessible to him. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  18. Fair enough, if you want to nitpick. I am satisfied with my point w/r/t his response. The summons arrives two-to-three weeks ahead and one can reschedule if they need more time. Plenty of time to get whatever needs to be prepared for in order. Clothes seem to be way more personal to others here than they are to me. For me it is simple: The instructions were clear (and the only part in bold was the attire, though two things were in red for whatever reason) and I would have respected the inexpensive Walmart dress way more than the t-shirt and tights. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  19. I would draw the conclusion you can follow directions and respect what was asked/expected of you "in return for the many privileges of living in America" (also quoted from my summons in the fourth of six clear instructions). The sixth instruction notes forbidden items. Would those so upset with the fifth instruction (attire) be OK with leaving their--however small--pocket knife at home to satisfy someone else's notion of what is appropriate? If so, then it leads one to the conclusion that it is simply a matter of what you agree with and what you don't and thus stubbornness keeps you from sucking it up and putting on a collared shirt and slacks for one day. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  20. All the more reason to put your best foot forward. Here, you only get paid starting on the fourth day and only $30/day unless your employer continues to pay you through service, in which case you get $0 (I fall into the latter category). The unemployed get $15/day for the first three days and $30/day starting on the fourth. Of course, in any scenario, most people will only serve one day. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  21. I am phlegmatic, however amused at times. For example, many people in this thread made the judgement those in t-shirts and spandex simply could not afford anything else. The only judgement I made based on clothes, was the lack of respect and refusal to follow the directions that were bolded for them on their summons. Though, it does make me wonder if prices have skyrocketed at the Salvation Army for dress attire. Years ago my hunny was in desperate need of a pair of pants due to various happenings the night before and the only place anywhere near the DZ was a Salvation Army. In less than five minutes I found him a great pair and my jaw dropped when the lady rang me up and told me the total was a little more than a dollar. I felt silly paying on AMEX, but it was better than breaking the $100 I carry for emergencies. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  22. So we agree one would expect to see most people wearing business casual or "better" when attending jury duty and not the other way around. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
  23. When you see a movie scene of a wedding, a funeral, the jury in a courtroom hearing a case, you see dresses, pants suits, coats & ties most of the time. This is because such attire is what the audience expects to see for said affairs. It is amazing to me this would come as a surprise to anyone. We will agree to disagree, as I am tired of the clothing deliberation. "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin
