  1. The whole point of the jury system is that you do not get the best and brightest on the jury, nor are you supposed to. The judge may be the best and brightest in his/her field. The lawyers may be the best and brightest in their fields. But the whole point of the way the system is set up is that the jury is supposed to consist of 12 very ordinary people of very ordinary ability and intelligence. 2. By this measure Canada should begin bombing Iraq right about now. "It's hard to have fun at 4-way unless your whole team gets down to the ground safely to do it again!"--Northern California Skydiving League re USPA Safety Day, March 8, 2014
  3. Basically you are saying there are two reasons an employee might be considered "non essential": 1. They are really a luxury and not really required for the organization to do its work. 2. Their work is more long term in nature and can be done without for a week or two, even though in the long term they are certainly essential. I guess my basic point is that there should be NO employees in category 1 on the federal payroll, in good economic times or bad. If a private company is doing well, then they should have the luxury of hiring such people, though. BTW by definition 2 the IRS may not be essential every week but they are certainly essential this week. 4. And if that same person doesn't stay in the same position today for more than just a few years, they are viewed as an unstable credit risk totally unfit to qualify for a mortgage. Catch-22
  5. It seems that in the event of a government shutdown, only "non-essential" workers will be asked to stay home. "Essential" workers will still need to come to work. Isn't the obvious question here--why do we have any "non-essential" workers on the federal payroll being paid with taxpayer dollars (or, just to tell it like it is, borrowed dollars) in the first place? 7. I show amend that to say--there is usually real money on Wall Street but there are always the Bernie Madoff's of the world! 8. Sorry I don't follow this. The messages from Craiglist that were posted are a bit of a caricature, but they aren't THAT different from how people really are on Wall Street. I base that opinion from having worked on Wall Street when I was a younger man. The difference between Wall Street and the Nigerian 419 scams is that there is indeed real money on Wall Street, but it is an intoxicating, fleeting, sort of wealth that isn't as conducive to stable romance as this guy/gal seem to think. One of my co-workers lost $400M and was fired--let's just say he'll never work in that town again. 9. If I were this dude I wouldn't count on this part: it is very likely that my income increases The Wall Street trading game can be very much a young man's game (apologies for any sexism/ageism but the majority of traders are both young and male). One's ability to maintain the stamina for that kind of job/income can fade with age just as surely as physical beauty does. Both the woman in the Craigslist ad and the man replying strike me as young and a bit overconfident of their beauty/income potential. 10. Someone who has held 1765 different jobs in their career isn't going to understand much about holding down a job. "It's hard to have fun at 4-way unless your whole team gets down to the ground safely to do it again!"--Northern California Skydiving League re USPA Safety Day, March 8, 2014
  11. Are you referring to the parable you posted a little while back about King Arthur, Lancelot, and the witch? It's an interesting story but I think the witch's actions speak louder than her words. Notice how, for most of the story, she is one of the ugliest women in town. Yet she still has the audacity to go for one of the most powerful men in the entire country--Lancelot. Her actions are a very strong clue to what women want. By the fact that she is even talking to Lancelot, she has already sent a very strong signal as to what she wants. You won't often find a powerful man who is unsuccessful in attracting women. The most intriguing part of that story, from my point of view, is why she went for Lancelot rather than King Arthur himself. 12. When it comes to Germany I have no problem with keeping them on a short leash for a LONG time to come. They elected Hitler. But consideration should be given to winding down the other three wars I mentioned. 13. Agreed...but you can't truly move on until both the active hostilities and the ensuing occupation end. "It's hard to have fun at 4-way unless your whole team gets down to the ground safely to do it again!"--Northern California Skydiving League re USPA Safety Day, March 8, 2014
  14. Just to clarify a little historical context...major hostilities in the Spanish American War ended in 1898...but the troops have been hanging around Guantanamo Bay ever since. 17. Not really because he'd already shown that any bozo (even Lazarus) could come back from the dead. Face it--scripture provides very clear job reqs for the Jewish Moshiach--things like rebuilding the Temple and establishing world peace. Jesus wouldn't have even gotten a phone interview for that job. 19. Okay, imagine this scenario. A man gets a woman pregnant (consensual sex) and she wants an abortion. But she doesn't have the funds for an abortion, and he doesn't want her to have an abortion. He, on the other hand, DOES have the funds to pay for her abortion should she have one. He also is willing and able to support the child should she carry it to term. He can also prove that abortion is against his long held religious beliefs, and that she knew about his beliefs prior to having sex. Under such circumstances should he be required to pay for the abortion? 20. I think so, yes. Your earlier post to "start at the beginning and read through to the end" made me think you were talking about something else, but I think I follow what you are referring to now. 21. Sounds like you might want to read the SIM too. I just did. There's not much in there in FF that can be done without a coach. The post-AFF skills are various forms of tracking, docking/redocking, and breaking off--all of which clearly require a coach/instructor to actually see and participate in to sign off on. I suppose you might be referring to the clear and pulls (5500/3500) or the spotting skills, but at my DZ, those are also considered coach jumps, not solos. When it comes to canopy stuff I agree there is stuff that might be signed off on a solo--but it is hard to see what else. The particular info in "Section C" that you referred to is just the standard info that every logbook provides spaces to fill in. As long as each entry is filled in completely before signing, there shouldn't be a problem. 22. Yes. They not only need to be signed, the log entires must include specific information. What sort of "specific information" could someone log on a solo jump that would be useful in getting the 'A'? At least when it comes to the FF part of the jump, most of the post-AFF mad skillz

  25. Also the link you provided seems to suggest that Fahrenheit realized that the freezing point of water is much more significant in ordinary human life than the boiling point of water--and, again, I'd agree with that. But, yes, it seems it was probably more complex than just taking the highest and lowest temps in a year and calling them 100/0.
