  1. Please define "landing solo". Thanks. Maybe he means that he needed help from the radio person? Although for an AFF1, he still would've received radio guidance, right?
  2. Cool .. I'm a real live skydiver now? My leg still hurts a bit from tripping over that fence while I was coming out of a corn field after my first off site landing last Saturday. Who wants to kiss it for me? Being clumsy on the ground doesn't make you a real skydiver. Only up in the air...
  3. I've been dreaming of skydiving the last few weeks or so...ever since my concentrated weekend of 3 jumps. Can't wait for next time!!!
  4. How about once you make your first off site landing without anyone telling you what to do or how to do it?
  5. Amen...first time I had to climb out there and hang out on the strut, i was scared sh!tless. I had a fear of small planes, and considering I did my A jump out of an Otter, the B jump out a Cesna...er..my 3 B jumps out of a Cesna freaked me out a bit. I think I'm ok now, but we'll wait until I have to climb out there on my own...
  6. What little confidence I do actually have is generally akin to a flaming aircraft crashing into a minefield by the point where I'm getting rejected. The chances of me to actually spit a line like that are, at best, very very low Maybe with learning all that Russian, you can finally pick up a Russian girl. Epic win! Hahah...you sound just like..an OTer.

  8. Oh i'm not bitchin'! The only thing I'm bitchin' at is this weather we're having...i had big plans of being out there at 730am tomorrow and knock out 3 - 4 jumps. Only thing I'll be doing this weekend is NOT jumping... But you know New England...we could have 2 months of sunny weekends or two months of rain, wind, & snow.
  9. No reason to go all the way to Columbia. California has some great DZs. Any recommendations? I hear Lake Elsinore is good. Are there any closer to San Diego?
  10. Lets say I start training at one DZ, and then because of weather/time constraints, I don't finish before the season is over (I'm in the Northeast). If I take a vacation somewhere (in January), such as Florida, Cali, etc...states where DZs operate most of the year or year round, could I finish my AFF training in a week or so? I'm currently on my D2 jump. Are the jump criteria the same at every DZ? In other words, even though the prices might be a bit different here and there, the requirements for each jump completion are still the same? Also, would love some recommendations of some DZs in Florida, Cali, and other warmer states where I could go during the month of January for a week or so to finish my training.
  11. coincidently it seems to be centered around you. It's my filthy mouth. And way too much time on my hands lately. Bet that's not all you got on your hands...
  12. I've got enough of those. It's kinda like collecting matchbox cars… having the cool looking ones is fun, but you'd rather have a full sized one you can actually drive. Are you saying you want a..ahem...large girlfriend?
  13. ...would do this. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/3074432/Russian-skydiver-swigs-spirits-while-floating.html No that's not me, but yes I'm Russian.
  14. Let's say, for the sake of the thread topic, that you were in a bar having a cold one and enjoying a night out with your friends. All of a sudden, you find yourself in a potential fight situation, whatever the cause may be. What song would you want playing in the background that would motivate you to kick some drunken a$$holes's asses? My pick: ZZ Top - La Grange LaGrange/ Tush ( Live 1982 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VLJsm8ohOg La Grange (Live With Brooks & Dunn) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gyq8N3hJeeM
  15. Well you can get a 500Gb external HD for $100 or less. Price also depends how much you care about the brand name and any manufacturer specific technologies (various back-up software, one-touch backups, etc.) That's enough for most people's music collections. Go with Seagate. They have the best manufacturer's warranty out there. Next go with Western Digital. This man speaks the truth. Oddly enough, I just had an issue w/ my external Lacie enclosure. All of a sudden it stopped working. Took the cover off and listened to the HD (which was a Seagate drive ) It kept winding up and then stopping, and seemed like it wasn't getting enough power. So i tested the enclosure itself, and sure enough, the circuit board in the enclosure blew. I plugged it in internally and it works like a charm! Incidentally, I have nothing but Seagate HDs in my computer. On a side note, I'm not a big fan of small (dimension-wise not HD capacity) enclosures that "save space." I'd rather get a slightly larger external enclosure that preferably has a built in fan and also has some air circulation space around the HD inside...

  17. What do graphic designers know about computers? All they know how to do is make pretty pictures. I worked as a jr. technician & computer geek at an engineering firm for 6+ years and put together prototype logic boards and tested them, as well as fix computers once in a while. Why don't you assemble a prototype logic board for a broadband seismometer and then get back to me...
  18. You could in theory, but would you want to? If you're a regular every day user then you don't need to do that. If you're a tech who wanted a portable OS on an external HD to diagnose problems, that's a different story. I think that aardvark's idea makes more sense and it's a bit less risky. How big is your hard drive in the laptop? You could probably get away with $200 or less for both the new internal hard drive and a new external HD. Check www.pricewatch.com, zipzoomfly.com, and newegg.com. Honestly? If the laptop is 6 years old, can you save up and get a new one? You can hunt around and get a refurbished or even new laptop for 300-450 hundred dollars. If all you use it for is word processing, web browsing, etc. then that will be a better option for you. Just some food for thought: Option 1 New external HD + new internal HD for 6 year old laptop - $150-$200 Option 2 Refurbished/new laptop ( try to get a warranty for both) - $300-$450 Option 1
  19. That makes sense. I still don't know if I'd trust someone named Aardvarkeater...
  20. I disagree with this method. If the hard drive is still working in the laptop, don't mess with it till the data can be backed up. If it's a physical problem with the drive, no matter how minor, taking the drive out and putting it into an external enclosure could potentially cause more damage. Keeping the hard drive working long enough to backup the data should be the first priority. Only after the data is backed up should moving the faulty drive happen. 1. Backup data to external HD that has preferably double the capacity of the current hard drive. 2. If possible, clone the whole laptop HD to an image on the external HD. 3. Install new laptop HD and restore HD clone to new drive. (If clone not possible, then install a new OS and restore the data) Good point as well
  21. This looks like fun...and you could take out some stress at the same time... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-nBn8QmI2U ..and think Office Space + the printer... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5orss3fAEU
