  1. Just a couple of sig's on lvl 1's, it overwhelms them, probably why they weren't on time with pulling. Second, you need to address this somewhere with her or a more experienced instructor at the dz. not just for student progression, but to contribute to your own safety, your life is worth this hard but necessary conversation, possibly confrontation, if you don't get what you need, you need to go somewhere else cause its not safe enough. You have no idea how many other bags of suck ass tricks a bad instructor will throw your way as the world turns, good luck Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  2. aff i's Wondering what your apinions are on releasing students who are stable but showing asymetry and some instability on release dives. I have heard been exposed to attitudes and find myself between them, based on student competency. 1) you have to earn the release by showing stability and competency. 2) Release the student and allow them to fly, have more faith in them then they have in themselves, let em walk. If you release them when they were not stable and symetrical, and they tumble and have an accident, would you say they were not stable when you were debriefed on the ground after an accident? 3. You reacted too slow to pulling your toggle in, it has to be real fast, as soon as your feet touch the ground. Running behind the canopy is good for slower winds than those you indicated, as you move back tword your canopy, the canopy will move, and it'l pick up momentum, which is why you got pulled to your face. it will be stronger than you in those winds. On tandems when I have no catcher, I sit down, and real it in, if you choose to stand and you have a big canopy and high winds, your canopy will win. One time a shagger missed and I tried to stand up, 25mph winds, I got lifted up about five feet, backward about ten, landed on my back on the packed reserve, which dug into my back, then the passenger came down on my chest and the reserve dug into my back harder, I thought I broke my back, pretty stupid huh, learn and live dude Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  4. Young people in the history of the world have raised families, fought in wars, saved communities, worked harder and longer than most adults. Young people ruitinely compete at higher levels than adults in the olympics. There was a 14, I think, year old polish battle ship captain in ww2, I think thats what it was, anyway. My point is not taking into the consideration a warped legal system. But that skydiving is a great way to teach young people about responsibility, consequences, and to get real. Young people are not getting more mature, I think we're getting less. In the old days every culture on the planet had rituals that youth had to go through to become an adult, the purpose was to get them to not make bad decisions that would fuck up the tribe, like having kids when the tribe couldn't handle it, etc. Skydiving is the best way to get people to learn that they are not immortal, and that we all have fear, and covering it up is bs. When we do not instill this in people they become borderline psychotic adult children. we've plenty of them in this society. I fear those who want to benifit from these adult children, they make money off human faliure. I'm not so sure we should run away from this question, I'm not going to do underage skydiving yet, but I got into this to work with people to help them deal with fear. This is important, and I'm not sure we should allow a failed legal system to keep us from our best as a nation. I know it says skydiving is of no benifit to society on our waivers, but I think we all know this is crap, it is, and its benifited us. Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  5. Teamwork is why he's mad, not landing off. I've worked with some good camera people and either way this would have not been a big deal. What makes it big is when one or both people don't respect each other and try and work together as a team. Different agenda's, don't tell me what to do attitudes, and then black and white arguments that have no grey. You were scared for your students safety, ok, he will understand this if he respects you. If he thinks your not a very good tm he won't, or doesn't. Good communication between team players rarely results in petty stuff, and can handle the big arguments without blowing apart the team. This is a small one, easily preventable with communication, remember dude, you guys are both really important for about 7 minutes, talk it out before hand. Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  6. The older I get the more I want people to understand just how dangerous skydiving is. I find people practice more, treat it with more respect, and mature the more they respect how dangerous jumping out of a plane is. People who use denial to deal with this, are just flat out annoying, no matter what age. Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  7. Let alone all those years of denial they have, I like your line of reasoning. I'm always amazed when a 50 year old person gets to the door, shaking, white, stiff as a board, and says their not afraid Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  8. No thanks, I'm fine with what we have, but with your safety attitude, I would recommend that you stay on the 500's Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  9. Can you explain the harder than usual pull, fatality stuff in Japan, I'm not sure what you mean. I've jumped them all, would love to stick with the sigma, fits well, love the student harness, handles are easy. Maintenance on the drogue bridle can be a pain, where if goes through the disc take a hell of a beating and when the kevlar is worn out the two retaining lines are way to spooky to keep using it. I recently told our rigger when the kevlars gone, where replacing it. Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  10. NO, if you can't land a parachute by yourself, should you get a skydiving licence. Sorry to piss anyone off who does this, but I am not sure where your reasoning would be, shit can go way bad on tandems, and require alot of strenth. I suppose if you just took light gals, and really watched what you did, maybe, whats the reasoning behind this thread? Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  11. I see young people do really well in high adrenaline activities at about 12. Martial arts, snow boarding, skiing, shooting, football, baseball, etc. If they are trained properly Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  12. Interesting point, do you think it had to do with physical age or her mental age, or both. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR THIS FEEDBACK FROM ALL INTSTRUCTORS ON THIS, AT WHAT AGE DO YOU THINK A PERSON, DEPENDING ON COMPETENCY CAN LEARN TO SKYDIVE? I think a competent 12 year old could do it, cause I see solid 12 year olds kick ass in other adreneline stuff, when trained properly Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  13. Don't bring them bring me, I'd love it Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  14. You got that right, they type rate pilots Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  15. the voice of conscience has shined through, great contribution, good to know, we all benifited from your sharing, Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  16. Wonder how many total jumps he had, it better have been in the thousands, and I hope he was thoroughly trained. Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  17. ok, once again, without stating the obvious, any ideas, Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  18. Other than the obvious obstacles, is there an outside the box thinker who can put something out there. My reasoning, is that I do think the skydiving process benifits our mind, soul. Obvious limitations, good judgement are necessary, but on the liberal side, kids go black diamond skying, shoot guns, climb, fly, surf, etc. I am wondering, and I hate to see a process that I have dedicated my life to working with others to find, be restricted to adults children, instead of young adults. Now, that said, out of the box replies are welcome, try not to critic those willing with the obvious stumbling blocks, c'mon, I know your out there Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  19. Your not an old fart, your a wise great old fart, I'm getting their too, matt can't you tell by my old fart attitude Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  20. With young people learning to skydive in wind tunnels, do we need to start exploring getting them in the air. I've seen the kids in the wind tunnels, and they are doing well. How are we going to deal with this, special ratings for instructors to work with them? Special equipment, or send them to Mexico? Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  21. You are so right, I wonder if we create higher performance on tandems equipment if we need to have the eexaminers start to introduce that stuff into tandem instr. training. I've often thought the tandem rating was way to easy to get, especially after doing so many, they really are just as dangerous when things go wrong as Aff, this would be a controversial thread, for sure Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  22. Lots of things in this sport, just like in this world don't have perfect answers, they create more questions. Manufacturers always have answers, but sometimes its just doesn't brake down that way in the field, then, after lots of experience, and seeing things go wrong, people ask questions. I find two types in this thread, those willing to say this is a frightening topic, the rsl tumbling cutaway, the loading/ hard cutaways, and down sizing tandem mains to possibly create higher forces on spinning mals. There are not perfect solutions, but some people seem to have all the answers, not cause they do, but cause they don't want to question, it scares them too much to say, yes, we may have something that needs to be looked at here, and may not be perfect, and may hurt or kill people. And thats part of the sport. I get angry when I hear people not willing to question, I don't get snappy at people who do, especially when there is field evidence that suggests all of these things need to be looked at, How many tandems mals have you had in which you experienced this stuff? Cause my fear comes for a dedication to the sport and to my students lives, and having these experiences and heard others having them. This is why I throw this stuff out there. Denial is that these things exist is not our friend, its our worst enemy. Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
  23. What this means for all out there is the hard cutaway question will be answered after a couple of fatalities, not now. As far as passenger position, this is only valid if the mal is cause by passenger position, bit clearly there are two distinct way people want to look at this, I know what mine is, hard cutaways exist, can exist, and with smaller tandem mains will be a problem at some point, good luck Those stuck in maya, seek to be seen.
