  1. hey lou, thanx for your post! ...and what do you think now (as a base-jumper) about the SuperRaven? Is it really that close to a Fox or are there better options? How many skydiving-jumps did it have when you got it? Would you do it again? mostwanted
  2. hi nick, thanx also for your helpful reply! as i am not speaking english that well, i wonder if the following line you posted some days ago says that it was good to fly an old 7-cell (e.g. used raven) (on skydiving) to train for base or that it was no good idea to do so. can anybody help to avoid that i misunderstand this. thanx.
  3. two more questions to the community: what is your opinion about this one: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=849452#849452 flying which 7-cell (as a main-canopy for skydiving) would be most-similar to flying a base-canopy? (for training) raven, spectre,... new or used (up to how many jumps?) a (used) base-canopy
  4. an which of both is more similar to a base canopy? ("sportier"=?) this would be the main-requirement, wouldn't it? PS: are both canopies ZP?
  5. hey tommy (and all the others), thank you again for your helpful posting - one question to the raven-spectre-switch: what was wrong with the raven? is it true, that the raven is so old-school, that you better not use one as a main-canopy (reserve?) any more? was the spectre new or used? looking forward to your reply. thanx! mostwanted
  6. ...there are (already) some interesting postings in this forum concerning (also) this topic (august 2005): http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1769034#1769034 where jaap (referring to the base-fatality list) says, that between 1995 and 2005 14 beginners died 21 experienced jumpers died 16 jumpers I couldn't judge http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1769034#1769034 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1769079#1769079 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1771120#1771120 "The teaching that can be drawn by these two accidents is: do not jump Italian subterminal wall: 1) if you are a low timer; 2) if it's windy and/or gusty; 3) if you don't do the right delay; 4) if you don't do the right delay caring to do a good track away from wall/protruding talus. " http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1772049#1772049 "So, yes please, someone out there (who can handle the work load and the responsibility of doing it right) should start keeping track of the non-fatal BASE accidents. I know I and every other experienced BASE jumper has at least one good story to tell and this body of knowledge is worth preserving and passing on, just protect your nose . . . "
  7. what about systematically working out "base-risk-(reducing-)factors" to help avoiding (reducing the risk for) accidents (which may lead to light injuries, serious injuries or death)? ...or is there already existing a document i did not find yet? let me give you some information how backcountry-skiers (may) do this (in europe): do you know "werner munter", the swiss avalanche-expert who worked out a method (based on hard statistical data) helping people avoiding to set off avalanches when backcountry skiing? if you use his method you should easily be able to "reduce the risk" to set off an avalanche by avoiding specific (risky) situations (on specific conditions) by following some basic rules. "his" most important avalanche-set-off-risk-factors (beside the "general avalanche danger rating"): slope-angle slope-orientation (N-E-S-W) size of the group various safety precautions (e.g. spacing between the skiers of the group) TO PUT IT IN A NUTSHELL: the "general avalanche danger rating" sets the risk-level to a specific predefined value. you are then "allowed" to subtract from that value if you avoid specific situations. to stay "safe" the final value should stay below another specific predefined value. e.g. you can easily minimize the risk to an acceptable level by avoiding slopes facing north with slope-angles greater than 35° when "general avalanche danger rating" is rated "moderate to high". what do you think: is it possible to systematically work out general "base-risk-(reducing-)factors" (or just some basic rules to follow)? -
  8. well, chat what would you think about writing some words about packing and posting some pictures of you packing your rig on BASE WIKI? i saw, that your are already listed as an editor and due to those praising postings i am already a little bit curious about that thing. maybe you find some time for that - i am sure a lot of people would appreciate this very much.
  9. thank you all for your interesting and helpful replies! @faber: yes, i already posted a comment on base-wiki, and just some hours later there has been setup a new topic "skydiving a BASE canopy". that was the article jaab refered to. i may be wrong, but i guess to link to such an artikel should be ok - but i am not sure... ...it was helpful anyway!
  10. ***Jumping canopyes out of planes on a regular basis should be packed like a normal skydive canopy(into a bag whith sail slider on),feeling the "BANG" aint somthing you´ll need to practice, its the pilot skills under the flying canopy that matters.. *** as i do not have any knowledge about packing a base-canopy here maybe a silly question: isn't there the possibility to make a "base-pack-job" with slider on to prevent the BANG? what about terminal-velocity-base-jumps? do you have that BANG also on "terminal-velocity-base-jump-pack-jobs" (if such a thing exists...)? (is this what is termed "slider down" or "slider up", or is this something else?)
  11. thanks faber for your interesting and helpful reply! i read this "do-it-with-your-base-canopy-thing" in the base-wiki (>getting into base>skydiving). i see, that there might be different opinions concerning this question. concerning the price of base-canopy vs. other 7-cell-canopies: i thought: "why should i buy another 7-cell-canopy (e.g. raven), when i will have to buy my base-canopy in 2 or 3 years anyway - let's do it with a base-canopy right from the start and use it afterwards for base!" is the price the only doubt you have?
  12. what is your opinion about this: i wanted to get into base for some years now. i made my AFF-course this year. now i want to buy my first SKYDIVING-rig to practice for base very hard. i want to buy a zero porosity base-canopy to be my main-skydiving-canopy to work on all the base-relevant skills (from packing to landing) in the next years - i plan to do 100 skydiving-jumps next year followed by another 100 skydiving-jumps the year after next year. would that be a good idea? what about using that base-canopy after e.g. 250 (terminal-velocity-)skydives for my base-jumps? (of course in combination with a base-container!) which base-canopy would you recommend for this project? should i buy a new or an used base-canopy? which container would you use for SKYDIVING that base-canopy? is it possible to install RSL on a base-canopy-skydiving-container-system? how would you pack the base-canopy (into the skydiving-container) for skydiving - like a skydiving-canopy or like as you would base-jump it?

  15. would you recommend a full-visor-helmet for base and if so would you recommend to "always" wear it when skydiving (in the years before starting to base-jump) - to get used to it (as early as possible)? is there a special model you would recommend?
