  1. >Want to argue against providing a basic education to all Americans? I'd rather not. I believe in current US constitutional interpretation. Educating kids 6-16 benefits each of them as much as it benefits society. I equate that with public works & safety, defense, law & courts, environmental protection. >Did YOU attend a public school or college? Through HS for free, yes. For why see above. And college isn't free. >1. Take a walk to your local hospital (good for the heart) and count for yourself the number of "workers" that are extraneous to providing healthcare. If decreasing waste is what you're after, strange you're looking to gov't socialization as the ticket. >Very few people are bankrupted by the cost of food and clothing You surprised me there. Seems you opted for 'it's expensive' rather than 'it's good for society' as a reason we should socialize healthcare. Hey, lots of things in life fair and unfair can bankrupt us. Why stop there? >2. Because prevention is cheaper than cure If people with basic means are financially prudent and care about the quality of their own personal health, they can provide for their own preventative medicine. As you said, it's cheaper than the alternative. After that if they want, pay an insurance carrier to share the risk of curing whatever disease or injury may hit them. But of course a compassionate civilized society should always provide healthcare and other basics to the truly needy. And we do. >our existing system discourages preventative medicine. Hmm. I don't have much to say about someone who would allow their government to "discourage" them from taking care of their own personal preventative health. Sounds like "nanny state"-speak to me. 2. Osi wasn't even a voted starter, although he did start because Kerney didn't play. And as for the teams the Giants beat during the playoffs: New England, 7 players Dallas, 13 Green Bay, 5 Tampa Bay, 1 But in fairness to the rest, the Giants were only 10-6 in the regular season, and made it through to the end due to the talent of their roster depth rather than a small set of superstars. As for the game? I didn't watch it. (forgot it was on) Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  3. I'll be happy to answer those questions, like I did all your others. But first... couldn't help but notice you keep avoiding questions of mine you seem to not have answers for. I'll save you scroll time: >...why is it that healthcare is too expensive when it's coming out of their own pocket, but not too expensive when it's coming out of everyone else's (taxpayer's) pocket? >...why stop at healthcare? Why shouldn't gov't then provide all of us with food, clothing, and other things we all need and use? Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  4. In a situation like that, I agree with you. But I guess what I'm saying is that if someone broadcasts an open connection on the public airwaves, I'm not taking it from them, they're giving it to me. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  5. Our personal healthcare decisions should be between us as individuals and our chosen health professionals, not politicians or gov't bureaucrats and regulators hamhandedly trying to 'control abuse', whatever that means. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  6. Because what Adam Smith had to say about what gov't can best do and best stay out of makes the most sense to me and the way I watch the world work. Roads of course fall into the category of a durable public works infrastructure. For all of its inefficiencies, gov't is probably the best mechanism for us sharing the cost of building, maintaining, and improving it for our collective use. Better certainly than each of us constructing and connecting our own 1/2 mile stretches of road. Healthcare is a personal service some need more or less of. Some can pay for it straight up, and some can engage an insurance company who's willing to underwrite the risk for the payment of a fee. I (and Adam Smith too) think we as a civilized society owe it to ourselves to ensure the poorest and most in need get it (and they already do). But that's a long way from handing the whole thing over to the gov't removing any remaining incentives for waste protection and personal responsibility. Even in countries with uni health care, many examples of those who get good care when they need it are often those who go outside the system for their own extra personal cost. I'll let you guess why they do that. If I'm guessing where you're going with this correctly, why stop at healthcare? Why shouldn't gov't then provide all of us with food, clothing, and other things we all need and use? Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  7. I'm feeling your pain here, but think of it this way. I take a couple thousand bucks out of the bank and decide to store it in a shoebox sitting in the middle of my street. It's my money and my box. If someone takes that money I'm going to slash their tyres. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  8. In one technical sense, yes, but not in the way we're talking about. Meaning, chances are the person who's broadcasting a wifi internet connection cares more about its misuse than the person who's 'broadcasting' (in a sense) to tap into that connection. Beyond that I agree with you about securing it. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  9. But when SportsCenter shows the most exciting parts of a game as highlights, most of the time those highlights are the scoring. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  10. What about times when the dollar was stronger than most of these other currencies? How does whether or not we or they had uni care make any difference? As for those who think people against uni care are selfish, why is it that healthcare is too expensive when it's coming out of their own pocket, but not too expensive when it's coming out of everyone else's (taxpayer's) pocket? To quote you Lucky if I may: "No one has yet to answer that one." Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  11. In fairness to your point, I suppose the ethics of it are debatable, since one could grind the other guy's speed down to a trickle downloading Rambo 4. But please people, it's so easy to secure it. Do it. Especially if you're paying for access by data size, or in say a condo complex or apartment building where there could be so many wireless cards/devices in range. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  12. Sorry, It's neither. FCC says that broadcasters are responsible for governing what they put out, not receivers. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  13. My neighbor's floodlight is bright enough for me to read by in my bedroom at night. He pays the electric bill which generates the light and I use the light because it's there. If he wanted, he could redirect the light or turn it off. Securing a wireless network is so easy; usually one click away. Yet when I scan for wireless networks on my street all but one are wide open. That said, I do agree with normiss that there's surely a risk. All you need is one geek nearby to ruin your life. That's the reason why you shouldn't tap in, not because you think you're stealing something. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  14. Yeah, that was pretty much my point Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  15. I think I remember reading something about Dutch or Aruban law not having the same kind of plea-bargain or immunity for testifying like we have in the states. Otherwise, they would have used that with the Kalpoes from the start. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  16. How about "Zzzzz..." Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  17. Sure. In most places, opposing teams' fans are pretty safe other than some ribbing so long as you stay cool about it. But try wearing your Giants gear in Philly at an Eagles game, or Rangers jersey to a Flyers game. On second thought, don't. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  18. This dude's credibility was lost just from the way he kept changing his stories in the days and weeks after her disappearance. Why would someone who's completely innocent stonewall or change stories as often as he has? Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  19. Well put. I simply find it impossible that the US gov't could pull off a secret conspiracy that large and complex. And as far as I know "Sun" and "Son" are only homophones in modern English. Any other language, that point falls apart. The funniest thing about Zeitgeist The Movie is that it asserts that the goal of the power elite is to create one single worldwide entity. Buuut...the makers of this movie call for a revolution against the power elite, asking for us to wake up to the fact that we as people on earth are one single worldwide entity. Whether the filmmakers see the irony is not clear. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  20. That's one of the strangest things I've ever read. Education? By the constitution, sure. I kinda wish it was pushed down to the state level or lower. Can't understand what a national level dept of education does or why it's needed. Healthcare? Looking around the world, it seems to be very expensive, of questionable quality, and quite a mess whether or not a gov't provides it. Given that, and given how gov't runs big things, I think I'll take my chances with keeping myself healthy and paying for my own healthcare. Food? How does anyone honestly figure it's the gov't job to feed its people? And here we have the "optional" list: a. Public Works (roads, bridges, utility infrastructure) b. National defense c. Law enforcement and courts d. Public safety (fire, disaster response/recovery) e. Environmental protection f. Tax collection (someone's gotta pay for all of this gov't provided food, education, and healthcare, right?) g. ...probably a few more I could think of; point made Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts

  23. We normally never remember who loses the Super Bowl. This time we'll all remember. In your face, cheaters. Long live the '72 DOLPHINS!!!! My MVP vote would've went to Tyree or Tuck, but Eli? Ok, we'll take it. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  24. I'd have to agree. But far be it for any of us to know how well we'd play in minus 20F something windchill. Just a little fun payback though, since the only giants game I went to this season was the week 2 smackdown at the hands of Mary's ex-boyfriend Brett, and this "pack" of SoCal relocated cheeseheads I work with have been on my nerves all year long... Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
  25. An Open Letter to the NJ angry housewife (in case she's a skydiver and reads this forum.) >who blow themselves up in search of nirvana Umm... I can't find nirvana in the koran. As for declaring "I don't care" a dozen or so times, in a way that's kinda the point, right? The more you don't care about the things that other cultures believe are important, just because you don't think they're important, you feed the flames. >If you agree with this viewpoint, pass this on >to all your E-mail friends. Sooner or later, it'll >get to the people responsible for this ridiculous >behavior! Yeah, because that'll fix everything. There's a line in Genesis' song Duke's Travels that reminds me of this so called "letter": "You kill what you fear, and you fear what you don't understand." Cuts both ways. Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
