  1. Look at that, Miss Florida name-dropping West Coast boogies! Also, check out the NCSL and a Facebook group for belly flyers... we have lots of stuff that you can join in once you have your A. https://www.facebook.com/NorthernCaliforniaSkydivingLeague https://www.facebook.com/groups/397819770277787/ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 2. If by "under threat" they mean "may eventually no longer enjoy the privilege/dominance that the 'white race' was able to exercise over the 'non-white race' because they arbitrarily believed their skin color made them superior" then yeah, it's under threat. As people flow more freely throughout the world, the physical differences between peoples that developed because of relative geographic isolation will become less prominent. As far as I'm concerned that's a neutral to positive thing, but depending on how societies handle it, it may turn into a negative. 3. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/13/fashion/hanley-mellon-clothing-line-fashion.html?_r=0 I don't hate all of them. But I really, really, really, really want to smack the smug off of these two rich twits. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 4. Just to make that even more specific (with terminology!) look for and/or ask for the organizers. A boogie like Summerfest will have a ton of them, who will be working with jumpers of all different levels. If you meet one and let them know your experience, they will connect you with the right person for that day who is organizing smaller jumps for newer jumpers. Working with organizers you will learn so much and they'll make sure you don't get in over your head. As others have said do a search for first boogie and similar terms and you can find a lot of good stuff. As for the canopy stuff, make sure that you get a thorough briefing. If it's not offered, ASK!!! Walk around the landing area when there's no one landing (or around the edges when there is). Get a sense of how big it is. Ask about the good outs and the bad outs. Study the aerial pictures (there are a lot of them at Skydive Chicago). Learn where not to land (there are some parts of the landing area that are restricted to jumpers with 1000+ jumps). 5. That's cute that you think that's true. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  6. I can't hate them because they don't exist anymore! Everyone is either an evil 1%er or scum-sucking leeches living off of Uncle Sam. 7. I'm not quite as high-maintenance, but I'm also not into dorm-style sleeping. In 2004, though, I traveled all over NZ with two friends, and we mostly stayed in hostels. We'd typically rent a quad room (with two sets of bunk beds) and either pay for the 4th bed up front or ask the hostel to give us that option if they were otherwise going to fill up and would lose revenue if they left that bed empty. That gave the three of us room to kick around a little, we only had to put up with each other, and our belongings were (somewhat) more secure as we could lock our room when we were out and about. Still had shared bathrooms and common spaces and met a lot of really interesting folks. We liked it because it was economical and fun, and usually put us in a great location for whatever we wanted to do, but also because that meant we didn't have to fuss over who shared beds. 8. And then when you get into doing 2-way or 4-way... the cost per minute goes down even further. Also, a lot of people who have huge numbers of hours buy at bulk rates, so the cost per hour goes down even more. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 9. Is she open to you Robbing other gals? Otherwise, how are you going to have the full Vader LP experience? "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  10. Bumping in light of the recent Eloy injury that may have had to do with wind conditions. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  11. That might've been less than your deductible ... probably not worth it. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  12. Real whipped cream will definitely leave a smell in your clothes that's hard to get out, especially if you're not able to wash the clothing relatively quickly after the pieing. Why it's definitely not cool to pie someone when they're still wearing their $500 jumpsuit. Better to trash a free boogie t-shirt instead. 13. http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2014/04/08/skydiving_meteorite_it_was_a_rock.html The Bad Astronomer (Phil Plait) has done a series of articles where he went from maaaayyybe thinking it was to definitely thinking it wasn't. This is the final article (but with links back to the previous ones). "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  14. It's all nasty, but this is one case where non-dairy whipped topping is better. It's a little less rancid when it gets all up in your nose. A little. It's still gross. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  15. Your question isn't quite clear - Are you trying to understand which stock sizes would fit? Or are you trying to understand whether a particular used rig would fit (or trying to know more generally so you can evaluate used rigs)? 16. I'm more curious about whether Perris is aware of this interesting edit of their footage. They may not care (any publicity is good publicity) but I think it's kinda shitty to make it look like somewhere like Perris would actually take someone who was passed out drunk. (That said, the YouTube commenters seem to have it covered with their usual high level of discourse: "Fake, you faggot, there's no way a real skydiving company would take you." With a few extra "faggots" thrown in there for good measure.) "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  17. Renters' or homeowners' insurance, depending on your living situation. You may or may not need a separate rider for it. Worth a conversation to find out if it's covered and if so, do you have adequate coverage to include your gear. (Think about that also from the perspective of your home being destroyed - when you got your insurance, did it only include your personal belongings, or do you need to up your coverage limits to include the skydiving gear that you now routinely store at home). I feel dirty

It's time to get a different job, actually. I don't have money worries in the sense of "paying my bills", I'm just… well, not happy with what I can do. All around me my friends are taking vacations, buying homes, doing 50 jumps a month and getting to really enjoy life. I'm not gonna pretend it doesn't make me really jealous. Wherever you go, there you are. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. 19. Would you accept the premise that there's more than one way to skin that proverbial cat and that maybe the one you've chosen is problematic? Instead of giving advice and being corrected, couldn't you ask an additional question/clarifying question? Or could you say "Is this the right way to think about it? [and present what you think is right]" That way you learn, and it also confirms that you're an inexperienced person who's also trying to learn. Credibility is earned not just through time and experience but also through how you communicate your ideas and teach. Something to think about if you hope to stick around in this sport and earn that credibility. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  20. Bumping this for the noobs... in case you think we cranky old farts have forgotten what it was like to be in your shoes. We haven't. I wrote this 9 years and almost 1300 jumps ago. I'm not embarrassed by it, because I tried really hard to be thoughtful in how I posted it, but it didn't take me too long to figure out precisely where the "old timers" (some of whom are, 9 years later, still active posters) are coming from when they tell newer jumpers to maybe tone it down a bit with the advice-giving. When we tell you to listen more, talk less, we're trying to help you get ahead of the curve and avoid looking back at your early posts 10 years from now and cringing. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  21. That actually is #2. #1 is is gear selection. Don't buy gear that is problematic or a reserve that is known to take longer to open than others. MEL Fair enough, but I did qualify it to the time period between leaving the plane and landing. At that point, the gear choices (and other choices, like whether to jump in high winds, etc.) have already been made.
  22. No it's not. It's a sport where the risk can be managed, but it ain't safe. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  23. All of 'em? Huh. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  24. Famous for being famous more than anything (as are many spawn of people famous for actually doing something). "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  25. A family will mourn. Two kids will grow up without their mom. Celebrity watchers will wring their hands for a while then move onto the next shiny object. Unless of course something really fishy comes out in the investigation in which case it might take a little while longer for her death to become un-shiny.
