  1. Considering I shoot black powder in my spare time, I'd say the M1 is probably safer. And I want one. However, if they ban the M1s, I'll just have to shoot the cannon more often.
  2. Not entirely sure this counts as rock, but... Tom Waits: "Come down off your cross, we can use the wood"
  3. Remember also, there are many different translations of the Bible, so what I posted may not be exactly what you're looking for.
  4. This isn't too bad... 1. There is an actual reason for the lycra. 2. They're actually doing something that will reduce the beer gut. Just as an aside, unless you are actually training for the olympics, there is never, ever, an excuse for a speedo.
  5. A lot of things that you can't force people to do can be conditions of probation, since a convict doesn't have to accept probation and can choose to continue to stay in jail. Not sure about the medication ruling, but I know that's why they can get people to waive 4th amendment rights and submit to search and seizure terms as part of parole/probation.
  6. Maybe these were the verses you were looking for: Deuteronomy 32:11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:28-31. If not, here's a bunch of "eagle" verses: http://www.bible-topics.com/Eagle-The.html
  7. Michael Crawford has a great recording of "On Eagle's Wings" on the album "Michael Crawford in Concert". It's on iTunes. Of course, I admit to some bias since I'm in the back-up choir on the album.
  8. I don't know, but I do know that my doctor gave me an earful about Atkins when I was a dancer in college. "Atkins is NOT for athletes!". Her specialty was sports medicine, so I figured she'd know. So, I didn't cut carbs, I just made sure they were healthier carbs, not bread and pasta and stuff.
  9. She's an Irish Wolfhound mix. Wolfhounds are huge. Pat Fish had three of them when she did my tattoo, and Orla was tall enough to put her paws up on a chest high counter and look you in the eye.
  10. If there are SS shortfalls, then the government needs to either cut SS or make cuts elsewhere to make up for the shortfall. Pulling money out of thin air and saying "we'll pay for it later" is a bad idea.
  11. Tax cuts pay for themselves when appropriate SPENDING cuts are also made. Spending in anticipation of money you might possibly have if people react a certain way isn't an economically sound policy.
  12. Honestly, I'm okay with changing the 14th amendment. It was a reconstruction amendment largely intended to guarantee citizenship to children of freed slaves, which is no longer an issue. Right now, we have a situation where pregnant women are jumping the border to get citizenship for their children, flying in on a "vacation" in order to get their child dual citizenship that would exempt them from mandatory military service in their home country, among other problems. I wouldn't mind revising the amendment to say that "if one of your natural parents is a citizen, you are a citizen. If you are adopted by a citizen before age 18, you are a citizen. If one of your parents becomes citizens before you are age 18, you are a citizen. If one of your parents becomes a citizen after you are age 18, you may immigrate and begin the process to become a citizen yourself." Other countries function fine with a citizenship by family affiliation, and that seems okay to me.
  13. red hair isn't a fashion statement. It's a warning label.
  14. While the story on coffee is interesting, I am really wondering how the Brits managed to come up with "spotted dick."
  15. Off on a tangent a bit but, I would find it hard to cope if I had to do what this young man did regardless of his age. His age would seem to me to make it even harder to live with even though the man is still alive. Why? I doubt he feels anything but "pride" in protecting his family...Plus he must either be lucky, or a good shot, to only wound someone with an assualt rifle! keep in mnd, this is the son of a cop, he deals with the pocibilty pf death eveyrr day...I seriously doubt it bothered him at all! I think he'll probably feel a combination of both. I've had to defend myself (I didn't have a gun, but I was sure wishing I did!). I felt glad that I got myself out of the situation with minimal injury, but sorry that I was put in the position where I had to hurt someone because they were trying to hurt me. The situation sucked for this teenager, but this was the best possible outcome. I'm glad he and his sister are okay, and hopefully the family will get the young man into counseling so he can better process the situation. I agree that he probably grabbed the weapon he was most comfortable with, which is pretty much always better than grabbing something more powerful but less familiar.
  16. Agreed. Coupons for big things, like Disneyland or something are cool... a coupon for a fast food meal would tell me that he and I are probably on different pages when it comes to finance, especially if it was a coupon cut out of the paper. Clipping coupons for stuff like that takes time, and I feel that my time is more valuable than the few cents I may save. Something that's handed out at the door of the restaurant, why not, the opportunity's there, use it. If you randomly come across a coupon for something cool, okay. But actually spending time cutting out coupons....shudder. Basically, I don't seek out coupons to save a few cents. It's not worth it to me. If it's worth it to someone else, that tells me that they are a lot more frugal than I am and we may not be a good match. While I'm very responsible financially (I save, pay bills on time, etc), it's simply not worth my time to save a few cents here and there, and I can be an impulse shopper sometimes (though only when I know I have money and can spend it comfortably), which tends to drive really frugal people insane. I think it's better to date people that have a similar outlook on finances.
  17. There are 23 separate schools in the CSU system. They can't all be hotbeds...most are politically neutral, in fact. The line should be that students not taking the professor's class are fair game. Disagree. The student should not be in a program in which the professor has any influence. Certainly in a different department. Hmm... I wouldn't have a problem with a student who is a history major seeing a history professor, as long as that professor is not the department chair or on any advisement committee for the student, and that the student does not take any of the professor's classes. The professor should not be in a position to exercise any authority over the student.

    Poison Ivy

I had good luck with this with a mild case of poison oak, but honestly, if it's bad enough that you're posting about it here, just go see your doctor or urgent care. They see this stuff all the time and can point you in the right direction for treating it.
  19. I'm sorry that your understanding of government is too limited to understand that, "State" means any level of government. In Constitutional law, that is generally incorrect. For example, the Tenth Amendment reads: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Here, "States" very obviously means the individual "states" of the "United States" and they refer to the United States federal government separately, making it very clear that "States" does not refer to any level of government.
  20. Having watched someone go through the agony that is being transgender, I don't have a problem with this. It's an approved medical treatment for a well documented disorder and what's probably best called a birth defect (the gender of the brain does not match the gender of the body). There are numerous studies that back up the finding that the brains of transgendered individuals more closely resemble the brains of those who are the opposite physical sex (and yes, there are differences between male and female brains). I did a huge report on this in law school and learned a ton. To probably oversimplify, it's not a "guy wanting to be a woman" or vice versa, and there's nothing sexual about it (transgender is NOT transsexual. Transsexuals dress in the clothing of the opposite sex, but do not want to BE the opposite sex). It's where people from a very young age realize that something went wrong in the womb and the body didn't develop the same physical gender as the brain. There are things that make us male or female, and those things are in the brain as well as in the rest of the body. We cannot change the brain, but we can alter the body to match the brain. Most of us are very comfortable in our bodies and have a hard time understanding how someone could not be, which is why there is a lot of misunderstanding and prejudice out there. People don't get that it's a gender identity issue, not a "sex" issue.
  21. And a Gay person does not have the skill to live by the bible, If they practice their sexuality! Doesn't Romans 3:23 say ""For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" If the club discriminated based on living by the Bible, nobody could join, since the Bible itself says all are sinners.
  22. When I did my tandems, I got a certificate and a booklet of cool skydive photos from the DZ. I bought myself a logbook after my third jump and bugged each of my instructors from my past jumps to write in it. When I took my friends to jump, I always bought them a logbook so they and their instructor could write in it. Don't know if it's coincidence, but every one of them has done a second jump, and one finished AFF and got his A. There's just something about having a logbook that makes it feel more official, and something about those blank pages that make you want to fill them with jumps. I wish dropzones would give logbooks to their students. A logbook is something every skydiver treasures, even if they only jump once or twice and set it up on a shelf. You can bet they'll show it to their kids someday.
  23. Good for them! Probably attributable to their greater maturity compared to HS students. But it's nice to hear. I think part of it was maturity, and part of it was that the school itself made a huge effort to create community among the students, and the students felt that that sense of community was violated because of the university denying a group that represented a part of the student body and actively attempting to create divisiveness. Even students who were very much against homosexuality opposed the university's actions, feeling that the university drew much more attention to the club by causing problems than if the club was allowed to exist without administrative opposition.
