  2. Aw, cut Colbert some slack. Let him smoke, drink, and eat under canopy. Still part of the skydive. And the tandem pilot won't have all that crap blowing in the face, etc. at 120, just at 20+. "Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion" - Democritus
  3. ------------------------------------------------------------ In Reply To ------------------------------------------------------------ Are these the two essential arguments of the original post of this thread? 1) Isolated, compensated, publicized, "unlawful" skydiving stunts with a published video/photo record harm the sport of skydiving. ------------------------------------------------------------ Yes. ------------------------------------------------------------ In Reply To ------------------------------------------------------------ 2) Repeated, gratis, undocumented, "unlawful" skydives without published video/photo record do not harm the sport of skydiving. ------------------------------------------------------------ No... These can harm our sport too, however, are less likely to do so. My premise was more, "if you choose to intentionally break an FAR, and we all do sometimes to some degree, don't brag about it." ****************************************** ****************************************** Now that we have clarified the argument, my position is that #1 is unlikely to harm the sport in general, even if Travis had died. My view is the FAA staff is able to distinguish between a skydiving stunt and regular skydiving operations. I argue that #2 (the one you seem willing to condone) is really much more likely to harm skydiving. These activities are performed by skydivers at regular skydiving operations. I feel the FAA would be more inclined to take actions that would harm the sport of skydiving in response to these. I believe that what we do as skydivers at our designated drop zones, week in and week out, is what will make the most difference in anything the FAA does regarding regulation and enforcement. In short, I think you have it reversed. "Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion" - Democritus
  4. There was a third bomb. The plutonium core and initiator were on schedule, barring delays, to ship to Tinian Aug 12/13 with the bomb being ready to use in the first suitable weather after Aug 17/18. Nagasaki was an alternate target. Kokura Arsenal was the primary. Nagasaki was where the Mitsubishi torpedoes used at Pearl harbor had been made. 6. Are these the two essential arguments of the original post of this thread? 1) Isolated, compensated, publicized, "unlawful" skydiving stunts with a published video/photo record harm the sport of skydiving. 2) Repeated, gratis, undocumented, "unlawful" skydives without published video/photo record do not harm the sport of skydiving. Harm to the sport of skydiving is defined as arbitrary retaliatory FAA actions toward lawful skydiving operations in the US. 11. My understanding is that the FAA FSDO in Puerto Rico was notified in advance with the details of this activity that was to take place within their jurisdiction, including aircraft number and flight crew, in order to protect the crew and the aircraft owner from FAA actions in the event of an awkward outcome. I understand the FAA response was something like you 'should not' do that. "Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion" - Democritus
  12. The runner must touch each base in turn. However, if there is obstruction called by the umpire, the runner is awarded the base that he was going to next. If that is home plate, the umpire may have yelled obstruction and then signaled the player safe. Often hard to tell, even if at the game. A catcher can be called for obstruction if he is not in possession of the ball, the runner owns the baseline. MLB umpires make the call and even if the runner is supposed to touch home after the obstruction awards him the base, the umpire may not insist on it. Particularly if that run is the game winning run. "Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion" - Democritus
  13. From wikipedia: The traditional list of simple machines is: The inclined plane (N) The wheel and axle (O) The lever (T) The pulley (U) The wedge (V [single wedge]; X [double wedge]) The screw (Y) Variations to the list of simple machines: Some say there are only five simple machines, arguing that the wedge is a moving inclined plane. Others further simplify the list to four saying that the screw is a helical inclined plane. This position is less accepted because a screw simultaneously converts a rotational force (torque) to a linear force. Some go even further to insist that only two simple machines exist, as a pulley and wheel and axle can be viewed as unique forms of levers, leaving only the lever and the inclined plane. 15. : NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS - "The earliest version of this familiar saying was attributed to the English King James I, who wrote in 1616, 'No newis is bettir than evill newis.' Virtually the modern saying appeared some years later in James Howell's 'Familiar Letters' (c. 1645) with the line, 'I am of the Italians mind that said.no news, good news'." From "Wise Words and Wives' Tales: The Origins, Meanings and Time-Honored Wisdom of Proverbs and Folk Sayings Olde and New" by Stuart Flexner and Doris Flexner (Avon Books, New York, 1993). Page 135. I'm sure you've heard of the king's joker, or merry-man, who loved to make puns, so much so that the king, in disgust, ordered him hanged. But the king's vizier prevailed on him to grant the joker a reprieve. Upon learning it, the joker immediately said, "Well, no noose is good noose." So the king decided to hang him anyway. 20. If you liked the ride in Mike's King Air, you will probably love the ride in Skydive Monterey's King Air. 7 mins to 18K. Whee! And you won't have to listen to Mike on the intercom. Although, I did laugh at Mike's intercom remark about how cleaning the oxygen masks with the provided wipes was optional, but we should know that the previous load was the local gay skydiving team. haha. 22. You have some points but they seem weak to me. I am not saying money is his only motivation. But I am saying money is one of his primary motives, along with other motives such as fame, family, his place in history,'improving the environment', etc. Al Gore is a brilliant businessman in the Global Warming Industry. He donated his $1.5 million Nobel prize to his Alliance that promotes his business interests that he owns and operates. Its non-profit status is a device. He controls the money and will influence how it benefits him. I have no problem with that. I would argue that is shrewd business tactics, and he benefits even more than if he had put it directly in his checking account. He positions himself as a benevolent donor to the cause. He made sure he mentioned the bi-partisan attribute of the Alliance in his prize speech. He intentionally (my opinion) did not say MY organization... He is an exceptionally gifted speaker. He knows what he is saying. His donation is deceptive because he does not say it is his organization, so the average person has no idea how he is actually enhancing his personal wealth and his public image at the same time, by his apparently humanitarian donation. Your arguments would have a little more weight if he had donated the money to an environmental organization he has no control over. But, I would argue that directing the prize to anything in the environment industry still is a direct benefit to his personal fortune. He is the spokesmodel for the environmental cause and he is the leader of the Global Warming Industry. Any monies that flow into that sector will also likely directly benefit him. Al Gore has many motives for what he does. He appears genuinely sincere in his concerns about the environment on the broad scale. But his personal conduct is not without reproach. 23. Sv3n - Yea, my scarcasm about Al Gore needing a job after he became abruptly unemployed in 2001 might have diluted my argument. But you did not address what I intended to be my main point, regardless of the money Gore may have wanted or needed, my point is: So Al Gore has chosen the 'perfect' cause that will guarantee his personal income. If the Global climate 'improves' he can, and will, claim the credit for it. If the Global climate 'deteriorates' he can blame us for not listening to him! Let's address what I think are your 3 points: A) Al has been campaigning about global warming for decades, but since Al only lost his job in 2001, his Global warming efforts since his job loss are not for his financial gain. B) I am not saying he may not have made some money off of this to pay for his tours and such C) the simple fact the he donated the $1.5 million that he got awarded for the peace prize to Global Warming research shows that his primary concern is not the money. Rebuttal: A) 'not for his financial gain' http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2007/10/03/al-gore-getting-rich-preading-global-warming-hysteria-media-s-help excerpt ... In fact, just two months ago (Aug/2007), ABC News.com estimated soon-to-be-Nobel Laureate Al Gore's net worth at $100 million, which isn't bad considering that he was supposedly worth about $1 million when he watched George W. Bush get sworn in as president in January 2001. Talk about your get-rich-quick schemes, how'd you like to increase your net worth 10,000 percent in less than seven years? ... B) 'made some money' http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/117/features-gore.html Al Gore charges a $175,000 speaking fee. Do the math, 10 speaking engagements = $1,750,000 How many speaking engagements since Jan, 2001? C) 'his primary concern is not the money' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_gore My wife, Tipper, and I will donate 100 percent of the proceeds of the award to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization that is devoted to changing public opinion in the U.S. and around the world about the urgency of solving the climate crisis.[83] Admirable, so this proves your point, but wait, who/what is this organization? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliance_for_Climate_Protection The founder and current chairman of the alliance is former US Vice President Al Gore.[1] So, then, Al will donate the award to ah, er, tada, HIMSELF! While you weren't looking, Al Gore got around behind you and bit your argument in the a.. As they say in Florida, you been had, Chad.
