  1. If i am not mistaken, USA CP TEAM will be eligible for the prize money. The others will not be. Good luck in Dubai, Dan!
  2. The list of participants (http://www.emiratesaviation.org/AAAA%20DUBAI%202011/FINAL%20STATUS%2030.12.2010.pdf ) shows a total of 12 US pilots. Eight of them are listed as "USA CP" and four are listed as "USA CP TEAM", with the last group having an "x" under the the CP column. Anyone on the inside has any idea how to (correctly) read that list? What's the story this year with the money eligibility and US team selection process? I find it difficult to understand - some of the names not of the "USA CP TEAM" should have been there. Team Manager's decision?
  3. How's the porosity? Have you done the good ol' suction test on the high wear areas (bridal attachment point, center tail section, etc.)?
  4. The Leader has announced the dates for the Florida/East Coast CP events: http://floridacanopypilots.wordpress.com/2010/09/05/2011-season-schedule-announcment/
  5. GoPro will be releasing the "dual camera mount ... pairing two of the HD Heros to film in 3D... a sync cable [is] included so that the two start and stop at the same time". http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/30/gopro-releases-its-budget-friendlier-179-hd-hero-960-teases-3d/ Perhaps this will work for pictures as well.
  6. That's just a receiver though, not a logger. Could be used with a jailbroken iPhone (or any other hand held device) and a good GPS app, i suppose... Makes the set up a little more complicated and potentially more expensive. AFAIK, these inexpensive 1Hz loggers are capable of 5Hz sampling, but only as receivers. For some reason they don't record to internal memory @ 5Hz.
  7. 1Hz gives you some idea and can be quite a useful tool but I would definitely like to see what a 5Hz logger could do for high speed canopy maneuvers.
  8. Excellent guess! :) just looked up on Google Earth and yes, the DZ is @ 326 ft elev.! 309 ft was recorded at ground level, so that should be correct, taking into account the +/- variations in GPS accuracy.
  9. AFAIK, there are several independent developers working on a unit like that. This is aimed primarily at wingsuit pilots, who can benefit from glide and speed figures in real time. For us (swoopers) it would only be good @ high altitudes, i personally dont want to have anything in front of my eye on actual HP landing. recording and viewing it later seems to be sufficient at this point. Here are some pics and a video of the POC (proof of concept): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBaoWjdbHHQ
  10. Here is a video of that same jump with GPS data overlay. Data and video are a bit out of sync, but that could be fixed rather easily with enough patience. However, this is good enough to demonstrate a proof of concept. GPS altitude data is off by about 300 feet, i dont know why. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NB_p-MWNuGY
  11. Try a GPS data logger + Google Earth. Search the wingsuit forums for some ideas. You may want to find a 2 or even 5 Hz logger - a 1 Hz logger (once every second) is plenty good for a wingsuit, but for high speed canopy piloting analysis it may be somewhat lacking. However, i've used my iPhone 4 and Holux M-1000C (both refresh @ 1Hz) and both of them recorded the pattern and turns (270 and 450 degree rotations) quite well. Importing the .gpx files into Google Earth provides some interesting 3D images and data. See attached for some screenshots from Google Earth of a 450 degree turn as recorded by Holux GPS logger You can also import the GPS data from the logger into the video of you swoop to see it "in real time". Follow this link to learn how: http://larve.free.fr/gpx2srt/Site/gpx2srt.html
  12. You better not, otherwise he will accuse you of tempering with his equipment and plotting to kill him! yuri_base AKA veter_ ? ... Search for his infamous posts labeled "Tampering with equipment" and "Is death game legal?" from five years ago, where he accused an entire dropzone of trying to kill him by collapsing his slider when he stepped away from his gear. In addition to that, he threatened to sue the dropzone and individual jumpers for being put on the Bounce Bingo list after his stupid and arrogant actions in skydiving. That discussion successfully stripped any shred of credibility he may have had and after becoming the laughing stock of the entire international skydiving community, he was forced to change his forum name to what it is now - yuri_base. The name change didnt reduce his love for trolling and idiotic posts though.
  13. Very safe design! Hardly anything will get caught on that huge Heavy-Duty flex arm. For that we have a nice sharpened metal hook on the left side of the helmet, which can perform a double duty as a camera mount.
  14. I've used a Triathlon 135 and a Saber 2 120. Currently use Magellan 120 loaded @2:1. Made by Skylark in Ukraine, it's a 9-cell similar to PD Saber 2. Even at a fairly heavy wingloading, Magellan is a very smooth opening canopy with plenty of swoop in it!

    Magellan

Light front risers, 1/2 and 3/4 braked flight, stall recovery, smooth and radical toggle inputs... the canopy is responsive and predictable in all flight modes. Magellan is docile enough even at 2:1, yet has plenty of swoop in it for experienced pilots. So I use my Mag-120 for wingsuit jumps and am very happy with its smooth openings and great glide.
  16. Same here...and I hope people see Im not trying to discredit any design or brand (far from it) but am trying to market a flying style... It's clear. And appreciated. I think it's the novice owners that dont necessarily create, but definitely fuel the brand wars. The (false) owner's pride, low experience and limited knowledge of alternatives tend to do that. Same story with anything - from computers and phones to cars.
  17. Can definitely see the oversaturation vs the GoPro HD vids... especially here: http://vimeo.com/12456094 Looking at it as a total package though - with the preview screen and wireless remote the HD170 does look like an interesting option for Joe Skydiver's needs, even with the lower overall video quality.
  18. I dont know, doesnt look that much worse on vimeo than the GPHD videos, IMO... Hope you can get one soon and run some real tests in various conditions.
  19. I've heard several reports of quality control issues. Stitching coming lose. Zippers wearing out after ~150 jumps. I also spoke to a PF dealer who said he wasn't happy about recently reported issues with the suits and was hoping that competition will cause the makers to pay more attention to quality. Thank you for your constructive response - i will pass on that info, if they dont have it already. And thank you (PF and other manufacturers too) for making great wingsuits! To see them evolve from Classic 2s and GTis to what they are today is great! Hoping to own one of yours some day.
  20. I dont really want to debate anyone on these forums, but your statements are not correct. Tony's X-bird offers same or greater range as V3. There are videos not just the ones we've seen here) that show just that. One of the original BASE wingsuiters and a long time Vampire flier was very impressed and had a lot of positive things to say about the suit after trying it out. That's just silly, especially highlighted like that. Nobody "imposes" anything on you. Dont want - dont buy it. Period. Oh and... they (Tony) already enjoy a market share. A good one.
  21. I wonder... Are all the latest issues i hear people reporting with the less than good quality of PF suits (not sure if it's just V3 or their other models as well) related to the back up in the V3 line? Are they rushing to get these things out the door? Ultimately, a friendly competition between the major manufacturers should produce a better product. Different flying styles, but same goals and similar results... Who cares about the marketing techniques? It's just business. Let these two duke it out like two kids - "my dad is badder than yours!". I am just customer. I can vote with my wallet. In return, what I get is a choice, a way to fly how I like and whatever my style is. Having a choice is a wonderful thing. Thank you for giving me that. I am happy with my S-bird, but would love to have a V3 too.
  22. One of the more technically correct descriptions in a news segment on the world of competitive swooping comes from a Russian news channel: http://rt.com/Sport/2010-08-16/russian-skydivers-explore-swooping.html
  23. They've updated the original review: And some more food for thought: Footage comparisons http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGXPKHbOm7o Test of zoom capabilities: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTs91kCLymU Has anyone used this yet? After having my GoPro HD lost on a jump, this one is starting to look like a more interesting option
  24. You ever thought that maybe YOU should go do something else other than trolling in informational forums? Go back to Bonfire, where you and the like belong.
