  1. In that case, he should avoid a 120 anything, and really not get involved in HP landings. Unless you're VERY good at it, it's almost impossible to avoid running, sliding across the ground, ot taking some lumps and bumps when you push a canopies performance toward the upper end. Student radios

We wont use them. Have been involved already in a lawsuit where the radio was blamed and despite resolving that claim successfully it still cost us a bunch of money. That was with using high quality professional grade radios already, which is part of what got us out of the claim. I own about 8 of the radio you linked in the second link for use as ground coms for staff and they are ok, but the reliability just isn't there when you are considering that someone is listening on the other end of that thing like a hawk to every word you say because they have panicked in freefall and don't remember what to do anymore. We use the Minotaur radios you mentioned because they simply are very very reliable being that they were designed and tested as EMS/Fire paging units. Also please keep in mind that a GMRS unit may not be legally used on GMRS channels by a business if you are in the states unless every person has a GMRS license. I know there are a ton of people out there using radios like that successfully, we just weren't willing to take the risk and deal with the crappy (comparative) quality. There are lots of options for professional commercial radios that work much better. I would suggest finding someone who sells two-way business equipment and get them to explain the differences. It goes outside the scope of what I can personally explain. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 4. What are you trying to figure out? We have PLU codes for all the rigs and that is what gets entered into jumprun when a rig is packed (to pay the packer). Subsequently we know how many jumps are done on each rig. Generally speaking we have been just having the packers write it down on a log and then someone enters it all into the system. I am writing a piece of companion software though that will allow for a "packer kiosk" so that the packers can enter their own pack jobs onto account and a manager can review it all. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 5. Eh, you're supposed to be scared. This isn't a natural thing we do here really. People weren't made to jump off/out of things in this manner. The fear goes away with experience, then comes back a bit differently once you start to get really experienced. (mostly you end up with a fear of the people around you who do stuff that is dumb, but even that is a matter of managing risk through again, experience) ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 6. Which one of my half-dozen posts where I've said I cannot/do not support SOPA or PIPA did you miss? I don't support the model. I do support the idea of very strict laws for theft of IP. However, the original assertion (paraphrased) was that "since people will always find ways of pirating...we don't need laws anyway" is pretty silly. People can always find ways to get into your pockets, speed down the highway, or get into your bank or credit card account. Because "people will always find ways" to do something, does that mean we as a society of laws, should not make laws to prosecute those that "do find ways?" Would you support that? If we had a system through which everyone's paycheck value was controlled by social access to it, I'm sure we'd see a very different attitude about piracy. Despite any of my other statements, I agree that there should be laws against and penalties for copyright violations. It's one of the reasons that I got my dz to switch to stock music that we actually paid for. I just didn't think it was right for us to be making money off music / etc that we didn't own and I didn't want us to have to deal with any problems that might arise from it. It would serve to raise the "cost" of pirating and it would deter more people towards buying things. Still doesn't change the fact that I wish media companies would do more to embrace where the technology is going though. I would love to be in a position to start a content generating company because I think it's a market that is ripe for the picking if you are able to follow the technology. I think hulu and netflix have the right idea with starting original programming. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 8. I was sitting at my desk yesterday reading dz.com and realized that I sit way way too long in one place without getting up and stretching or anything. i looked around on the web for a bit but couldn't find anything worthwhile to help me solve the problem, so I wrote a little app to make a noise/flash every so often. http://www.liquid-sky.net/apps/oe/publish.htm I thought I would share it. It's totally free and unobtrusive. It will minimize to the taskbar and works with or without speakers. You have to have .NET 3.5 on your computer or it will install it for you. Hope it helps someone else feel a little less sedentary at work. Also: Dunno what to say about trusting this, I realize people are skeptical of installing stuff these days. I think this post could go so far as to say I am not a bot or whatever. I jump at Sky Knights SPC Blue Ones! Edit: uh, only I have used this, so if there are bugs or anything, let me know and I'll fix em. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 10. The cost is in the perceived risk of what would happen if you get caught. I think the big point here is lets not go and destroy half the internet over it. It's an inherently messy subject because the internet (as it should) extends past the borders of our country and it's laws. Politicians and the legal system in general just aren't set up to deal with this kind of stuff. Technology has outpaced societies ability to keep it's people from doing things they shouldn't and modern society has been desensitized to right/wrong. There are more examples than I care to enumerate where things just don't make sense because technology has outpaced society. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 11. nah man, I don't think that at all. You're still talking about stealing something that actually exists, a specific hand made painting. If I go into an art museum and take a picture of a Monet with my digital camera, that's stealing too, but it's different than if I take the picture off the wall and bring it home. That's really the only point I was making. I think artists deserve the right to be fairly compensated and I think most of them are, at least the ones who are the big backers of the RIAA and SOPA and all that. Mostly what hacks me off is that the cost of a product that you used to actually get a piece of something physical is the same as what you pay now for no CD, no jacket, nothing but a digital copy. I suppose you can make the argument that you're paying for convenience, but meh dunno, I just feel cheated. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 12. What business model would you suggest that can compete with "free"? How low do you suggest the price has to be to induce people to pay for something as opposed to just stealing it. (notice no quotation marks around stealing, because taking something that others have paid a lot of money/time to produce, without compensating them, is stealing, not "stealing"). Part of the equation of what seems "reasonable financially" is the penalty to be paid if you are caught stealing. If there was no chance of being caught, prosecuted, and sent to jail, how many people do you think would pay for gas instead of just filling up and driving off? After all, the gas companies are just greedy bastards and they have enough money already, and I need a tank of gas to get to the DZ! SOPA is incredibly badly thought out, and if enacted will do a lot of harm, but the need to legislate some restrictions and penalties follows directly from consumer behavior. Absent any negative consequences to stealing, taking something (anything) without paying for it is always "reasonable financially". So musicians/actors/camera operators/set designers/writers/etc are owed nothing for their time and creative efforts? The price of a product should reflect nothing but the cost of the material used to generate a copy of the music/movie/book/whatever? How many movies do you expect will get made if the "reasonable market price" does not include anything for salaries, sets, special effects, etc? Do you really expect all those people to produce product for your entertainment without any expectation of compensation? Don The last couple of guys hit it on the head with what I was saying. No I don't suggest that anyone shouldn't be compensated for what they create, should they desire that compensation, but expecting the public, who isn't as entirely stupid as people would seem to assume, to continue paying $15 for a CD that used to cost $5-$10 to make, ship, store and sell at retail when you have cut out 95% of the effort required on the sales end is the definition of being greedy. Adapt and survive or people will find another way. I am not saying it's right or wrong, just what I see people doing. I never really read a lot of books, but I would borrow them from friends at times and have read the odd pdf version of a book, or shop at used book stores, whatever. I just couldn't stomach paying $25-$50 for a new book. I have a kindle now, if I want to read something I click through the menu and it gets charged to my credit card. I read more now and actually buy books. (Thanks amazon!) That's the point though about finding the right price. I don't mind paying $100 for seats at a concert where I can hear the music blaring see the singer sweating and the drummer wailing away. That's awesome. But I won't pay $20 for a cd. Dunno I just can't do it. Consequently I don't have much of a music collection. I listen to pandora (free with ads) and I pay like, $30 a month for SiriusXM for car/car/truck/work. It's convenient and gets me what I want at a price I can stomach. Everyone's idea of reasonable is different. In the last few years I have been having a harder and harder time accepting what corporate America wants me to feel about "reasonable" and "value." I am not about to go out and occupy something but I can understand where those people are coming from. Also, fwiw, I said steal with quotes because there is a difference in taking something that is tangible vs intangible. Neither is right, but there is a difference. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 13. That's sort of been my position on the matter for some time. I was in high school when napster broke and internet speeds and writable storage media got to the point where you could actually get a movie and burn it to a dvd. Prior to that happening, it just wasn't even possible. Once it was though.. it has only grown by leaps and bounds... I mean I know people with hard drives with thousands of movies on them. Netflix streaming is cool, but 90% of the time, the movie I want to watch is only available via dvd or bluray and by the time I get the disc in the mail I am surprised cause I forgot about the movie amid the vast number of things in modern life that distract me. I would pay more for a streaming service that made available any movie that was post "theatre" period. As it stands now, for the most part I just consume less. I do other things cause I don't really want to deal with the whole download world anymore. More risk these days, etc. I see this as anything else, the companies aren't adjusting to the times. People will continue to "steal" the movies/music/etc until it seems reasonable financially to not do it. Even then though, people who can't afford to buy will take. The desire to earn more and more and more money has prevented these companies from moving forward. In reality, it mostly just makes the lawyers rich. I guess all this rambling is really just trying to get at this. If the producers of this content would just find a way to put their product in the hands of consumers at a price consumers can actually afford to pay (given the fact that there isn't any physical product involved anymore) then the piracy would go away, at least for the most part. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 14. I'm not sure I understand why upright position only comes with an automatic. I'm almost ridiculously sensitive to driving position, and I hate being reclined noticeably. To the extent that I have a pad so that my headrest doesn't force my head forward (it does because of my height, and the fact that most people recline their seats more). Wendy P. Two different issues. The upright position alleviates the constant back pain I had (and begin feeling again when spending any significant amount of time in a car (even more in a seated position with legs almost straight out in front). The automatic alleviates the hip/knee pain that I have found are constant and come with driving a standard. I've had joint issues since I was a toddler that to this day no doctor has ever put a label on, and any number of things exaggerate the issue, but I found the daily driving of a standard to be a prime offender. It's funny cause i have had the opposite experience. I have both an auto and a manual. My left leg gets sore sitting in cars that don't have a good left foot rest. I have found that manual cars tend to have nicer places to set that foot than automatics. Never understood why they couldn't put the nice flat foot rest in both versions. None the less, manuals are cool and fun, but bleh I get sick of it in traffic to work every day. Having both is nice and yeah I phantom clutch in the auto. 15. If you have an up to date log book and a license card filled out with the things that you have done and are still within 30 days of your last jump come on up and we will get you sorted out. If you have gone uncurrent you will need some re-training and you will have to show us that you understand the gear and emergency procedures at the least. 19. When working with mixed footage I scale it all up and motion track it up and down. You can do it by hand in premier if it's fairly basic, otherwise run it through something that can do vertical only motion tracking. I know it sounds like a pain in the ass but I have found that in the end, it makes a better video anyways. I have mostly produced DVD grade output stuff from HD footage cause i wanted to be able to pan the video around some. 25. Maybe dude hasn't updated his profile (trying to give the benefit of the doubt) but none the less. As a side note, a friend of mine has a KA107 and I borrow that rig sometimes. Honestly, I don't like jumping the KA at that wingloading. I find the velocity to be more controllable, less divey and more recoverable if you're low than the katana. I have to discount that opinion with the fact that I do have substantially more jumps on the velocity, but at close to/just over 2.0 on both, I feel the velocity is a much wiser choice. I dunno, could just be a feeling thing. I have over 1000 jumps on my velocity and only 30-40 on said katana. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
