  1. If F is a finite field, F[x] has an irreducible polynomial of degree n for every n. It follows that there do not exist algebraically closed finite fields. Hence, all algebraically closed extensions of a finite field must be transcendental, since all algebraic extensions of a finite field are finite dimensional vector spaces over this field, and are therefore also finite. Possibly the easiest way to see that some transcendental numbers exist. However, this does not show that they are real, since the reals are not algebraically closed. It is known that e and pi are transcendental, but the proofs are tough. Yay for finals in ring theory -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 3. Yep, read the page, but it's inconclusive. I'll be there watching it anyway. The books are great, I've read them over several times. Hopefully they will do justice to the books that gave us the Babelfish and 42. Can't even decide on a favorite part of the books, it's all so good. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 8. Only 5? The movies are already long and compressed. In my opinion, they're meaningless except as eye candy for people who already read the book. You don't get much from them otherwise. My biggest peeve is the ending of the second movie, where Faramir actually takes them all the way to Gondor. That was lame I think. For the rest, I think they chose the unnecessary (or sometimes just weird, like Tom Bombadil) scenes to remove. The Arwen-Aragorn love affair is... decent, but not great. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 11. I have met my share of competitive people. It's not that they don't enjoy what they're doing, they enjoy a different aspect of it. I can understand them. The feeling of accomplishment after something that you've been planning and practicing for half a year succeeds is a good enough reason for me. I've heard these stories about the big US dropzones. That a lot of people there don't enjoy their skydiving, it's like a job. I find it hard to believe, frankly. The Canadian national RW team trains at our DZ. They don't do any fun jumps, they jump all day and stay focused. They're also great people. Always say hi to me when they notice me. I have no doubt that they are enjoying themselves. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 12. I have a different question. Does there exist a canopy that lands faster in half brakes than in full flight? Every single canopy I've jumped, and every canopy I've ever seen anyone jump, floats when you put on the brakes. Flaring

How strong was the wind? This sounds exactly like a full flare in a high wind day. You don't flare fully in high winds. Usually, you need to flare very very little.
