Smoke 'em if you got 'em

Recommended Posts

I have gotten quite a few requests from those who have purchased my book for information on stores that one can buy smoke from. Below you will find a small list of sites on the web that sell smoke. Some have shipping restrictions so check the stores policy. Those stores outside the US have their respective country next to the link for ease of finding a store in your neck of the world. Those not marked are in the US. For those who don't have the book, a bit of advice. If you buy any of the smoke sold from one of the marine outlets or smoke intended for use in a marine environment, be sure to test it on the ground first for any signs of persistant dyes that may cause staining to your suit or your canopy BEFORE you jump it and to ensure it is suitable for use.

Hey Lou,
THANKS!!! for the links! 704 should be all over that....but I was hoping you could post some info on BRACKETS for jumping smoke with wingsuits. Particularly a suitable cutaway system for an 'over the bootie' type bracket, not so much as how to attach the smoke to you, but how and where to attach a cutaway 'handle' on the outside of a wingsuit..:P.....photos are great as 704 can fabricate just about anything....except a packing machine:D.
Thanks again,
Blair

PS O do you have any personal feedback to offer on any of the suppliers you listed? I figured most of your smoke comes from work, but if you've bought any on the open market how'd it go?

Edited to add: Excuse please if this is all covered in the book, so I just sent my $$$ to you skymonkey :)

Everything you asked is in the book but the short answer is the Jim Wallace smoke bracket. You can contact him through his website to place an order. I cannot recommend or personally attest to any one of those stores reliability but as for the canisters pictured on the some of the web sites,I have used several before, so the quality and applicability of most of them is good.

don't forget paragear has cold smoke to in ~7 colors and white. I've used both types of smoke they provide under canopy. I know the white 'skydiver smoke' doesn't stain. I noticed that Red had the potential of possibly staining more than orange or blue so watch your stuff. It's ground shippments only to US and maybe canada..

Blair,

Jim Wallace Bracket is the one I jump, I think you've seen it.

And BTW i've jumped the paragear (crap), it pretty much is useless.

I'd be interested in hearing from those who have jumped this marine stuff - and how it looks with the 50/80-90MPH winds hitting it.

And for us brits...

Yeah, thats what the letters "UK" next to several of the links I posted are for:P

BTW, Nice looking suit ya got there. Thats as blue as they get:D

Several of the canisters pictured for Marine use are also pictured in the book and used by others quite often. I believe MCordia uses the orange canisters with good results. There was a thread not long ago with a guy holding a smoke in his hand while in flight, which is what the other models could be used for as well. One of the sights has video on it and you can see that the smoke is pretty thick even with the wind moving pretty fast on the ground. The Fireworks and paintball ones may not be as reliable or effective but at that price and quantity it can't hurt to give them a try.

It's a buddy of mine, Jean-Louis, and he scored a small crate with a dozen of those canisters. They are Marine/Navy smoke-canisters (as you mentioned).

Just one is bright/thick enough to be seen from the ground (scroll to the ending of this video to see it in use)

They burn for +- 5 minutes..
Quite hot, so carefull with chute/lines falling on it after landing...

I think Bo Weinberg used the same ones at the Herc boogie(?)

Don't fly behind someone in the smoke, tastes like sh*t :P

So Kevin what do you use? and could you post a pic of the bracket --- does the bracket keep the smoke off your suit?

Thanks

The pics that Lou posted are my foot and my bracket :) (we also made an apperance in his recent book).

Anyway, I jump M18s, I think the combination of the bracket as well as my all silver suit keep the smoke off my suit. The silver fabric has some type of coating on it which seems to be stain resistant.. the only stains on the suit are on the fabric where the booties snap.

Liberty Parachute Team (one of the members posts here) sells some new smoke which puts out more than an m18.. i haven't jumped it or seen it but he seems to love it.

So Bowlan, can we expect to see this smoke you have been talking about for the past year hit the market in 2007?
