jtval 0 #1 March 10, 2003 ok I WAS gonna buy a small cam and helmet but I am think of using the video camera I have now and just mount it on my helmet. (i will probably have to buy a new helmet though) and suggestions? I added the pics here there is a pic with the helmet just to give an idea of the size! eventuallyI would like to get the PC(I think those are the small models) but for now I wanna get a cam on my head and learn to fly it! any suggestions? My photos My Videos
BoobieCootie 0 #2 March 10, 2003 Bonehead makes a top mount for their mindwarp. You could also check out Skydance Photography's Velocity Top Mount Platform. But this one will set you back 10 hop-n-pops or 4 full-alti jumps whichever comes first. And get a chin cup while you're at it. You'll want one eventually. jtval 0 #3 March 10, 2003 thanks! I guess crazy glue wasnt gonna work any way huh? HAHA! My photos My Videos
BoobieCootie 0 #4 March 11, 2003 I think you'll have more luck securing (permanently)your camera with crazy glue than with this top mount. You might want to also consider a bag to go around your camera since it uses 8mm tapes (says on the picture). It's to minimize air from getting into the camera and causing flutter (is that what it's called?). Just my thoughts...
Cajones 0 #5 March 11, 2003 You'll find lots of advice on here about starting to fly video, so I won't rehash it, this time. I think what Boobie was referring to is called a "camera condom." A neoprene cover for your camera to cut down on air intrusion and even give your camera a little bit of bump protection. Consider a used Pro-tec style helmet for your first helmet with this camera. Talk to a local camera flyer your trust to help you locate one. When you're ready for a new PC-style camera, you'll also be ready for a new helmet. The laws of physics are strictly enforced. LouDiamond 1 #6 March 11, 2003 Hey JT, this looks like JUST the helmet you need to fly that specific camera. Plus it has YOU written all over ithttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2716446099&category=310 "It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
BoobieCootie 0 #7 March 11, 2003 The mention of "condom", "camera", and "video" on the same subject might overload JT and stir hiim into thinking he's a porn star. Therefore the long winded description

Dont the PC3's use 8mm tape too? I know they are usually in the hard casing so does that prevent the tape flutter? Cajones 0 #9 March 11, 2003 Quote I know they are usually in the hard casing so does that prevent the tape flutter? The tape flutter issue is a strange variable. It was more common with the bigger 8mm decks, perhaps just because tolerances weren't as tight on the larger bodies. MiniDV altogether seems to be less prone to tape flutter (although the 900 and 950 suffer from a lens flutter issue) perhaps because of the thinner tape or just the way the transport loads the tape to head. The PC3 is a miniDV camera. The camera you'll want after flying your "learning" camera will most likely be a miniDV camera, but may be a microMV or other type by then... Patience young grasshopper... jtval 0 #10 March 11, 2003 Patience young grasshopper... you mean I gotta get my PhD in order to be a vidiot? damn so many requirements. lol seriously, do you think its worth it for me to try to rig this camera to a helmet or should I just wiat til I get the $$ to do it the correct way? Deuce 1 #11 March 11, 2003 JT, I think you should wait, and do it right. Use of gear develops habits. You'll end up having those habits as useless, dangerous garbage when you change gear and need to develop new muscle-memory habits. If you're just going to go top-mount, and stay that way, you'll probably be fine, though. Plus, you'll have the joy of breaking that camera on a door somewhere! jtval 0 #12 March 11, 2003 yea that was the way I was wiating to go but I was getting impatient! anyone know where I can get a vid helmet set up for free?(with no bad carma) lolMy photos My Videos
Deuce 1 #13 March 11, 2003 If you can wait til May, I'll put it together for you at Perris. Get a Pro-tec, like Cajones suggested, and get a football helmet chinstrap and mount it up. We can do the rest with some aluminum and a Dremel tool. Does that camera have a lanc port? JP
jtval 0 #14 March 11, 2003 lanc, Yes! what is that? I never knew what that was for! I will take you up on that, I think! Ill bring it with me if I havent figured out WTF to do with it by that time! My photos My Videos
Deuce 1 #15 March 11, 2003 The lanc port is where your Cameye II plugs in. That camera doesn't look too friendly for manually turning on while it's on your head. Go ahead and get a Cameye II now, you'll be able to use it with whatever Sony camera you end up going with. That's if the plug doesn't strip out when you scrape that camera off on the horizontal stabilizer of a KingAir
jtval 0 #16 March 13, 2003 cool I will lookinto getting the cam eye when i get my $$ form texas(travel pay)My photos My Videos
skychic68 0 #17 March 17, 2003 The camera condom is a great idea. I have an older TRV that i have mounted. To protect it from banging into the plane and minimize tape flutter, I bought one of those "tummy wraps" made of noprene and velcro it down. Has worked great for me. VisionAir 0 #18 March 17, 2003 anyone know where I can get a vid helmet set up for free?(with no bad carma) lol Don't know about free but I'll do cheap... I've got my old Paramount System3 (www.pia.com/skydance/system3.htm) up for sale. Can't remember if it's Lrg or Xlrg. I'm thinking it's Xlrg, but size is all in the padding and can be changed. I added a BoneHead rachet chincup to it because I didn't like the leather strap chincup. It would always loosen up which was causing helmet shake. The rachet chincup fixed that problem. It's got the original orange sight mounted for right eye dominance. It also has a crappy custom red/yellow splatter effect latex enamel paint job that can be easily peeled off. It doesn't have the front mount swivel-plate for stills though. I bought it used for $100 from some guy that used it on a North Pole jump and I put about 150 jumps on it before adding the the $30 rachet chin cup. The new chin cup got less than 30 jumps on it before I found a great deal on a FlatTopPro. I'll take $80 for it shipping not incl. It's at the dz atm so I can't take any pics of it but I'll try to remember to get some this weekend and post em. Huh?!? What cloud?!? Oh that!!! That's just Industrial Haze Alex M.
