Skydiving Aircraft Forum

Recommended Posts

I'd like to make the suggestion (and would appreciate it if those who agree would second the motion) for a forum to cover Aircraft/jump plane operations.

I see a lot of posts on aircraft maintenance for jumpship operations, STC's, economic comparisons, et cetera scattered throughout the forums ~ lets make a place for it.

We've had a few of these requests over the past couple of months, and it's something that we are thinking about.

Our concerns though, is that there is a very limited amount of pilots out there and the activity in such a thread would likely be extremely low. We have received requests from dropzone owners in the past to create a separate forum area for the DZOs, but ultimately it's also just an area where we're not sure if the activity it would receive would warrant an entire forum section dedicated to it.

With that said, as I mentioned above - it's being thought about and I have discussed the idea with Sangiro.

At this stage at least, discussions of such things could be done fine in the General Skydiving section of the forums.

Bolding mine.

I think that an "Airplane" forum would get a decent amount of traffic.
Not necessarily jump planes only, but stuff like the Reno crash, the Iran 727 minus nose gear landing, even Howard White's "Name That Plane" threads from the History & Trivia forum.

There are a lot of threads about planes out there, spread across all the forums. Bringing them together, along with jump plane ops and maybe even DZ plane issues (Lodi anyone?) would be convenient.

And yes, DiverDriver's website is very nice. He's put a lot of work into it and it is very helpful. A sticky with a link to it would be a good idea for the fourm. Maybe even make him a mod for it, if he's willing.

I feel that it would be an invaluable resource. Sometimes wild speculation and half truths run rampant. It would be a great place for non-pilots to go to solicit opinions and information from professional pilots.

Maybe it could be expanded to Non-Skydiving aviation. That way gliders, ultralights, PPC, ect could also be included.

Except that DZ.com is not a general aviation forum, it's a skydiving-specific forum.

we have a bonfire right? I would say a general aviation forum would be more closely related to skydiving than the bonfire.

Yes, and a Speaker's Corner, too. Meaning you've simply missed the point.
All the non-social, aviation-related forums bear some direct relation to skydiving, skydiving training or parachute jumping. Gotta draw the line somewhere. You and I would draw it at different places.

Bump. The diverdriver site is no longer with us.

Yes, the DiverDriver.com website is off the air. I'm not sure when / if it will come back. Not exactly the way I wanted it to go but I had to prioritize my bills. It was not high enough.

I want to apologize to those who have used it as a resource and to those who helped me keep it going over the years. I have not updated it in many years and had major problems running the forum side of it. I was tired of the constant porn spam attacks. I have, however, continued to give input to USPA about jump plane accidents and my thoughts for the future though. USPA has adopted my jump pilot training syllabus into their documents and that is most gratifying.

If I have disappointed anyone I am truly sorry.

I don't blame Chris for not keeping it going, but I will really miss it. So will others.

So how about a jump pilot/airplane forum?

One more person who thinks an Aircraft forum would be very helpful. Although we discuss aircraft in other forums, it would be much easier to find previous posts about important aircraft issues if there was a separate forum. I think the volume now warrants it.

Also, I don't think that Chris Schindler is going to revive diverdriver.com any time soon.

We don't doubt that it would be a useful forum to some, our concern however is numbers. We couldn't justify creating a new forum section if it were to only be frequented by a handful of individuals. In reality, how many users would actually participate in such a forum? If we can establish that it would receive a worthwhile amount of contributors we're definitely not opposed to getting something going.

From what I recall, I think it would be about half of the posts as the Tandem forum. It may not be as many in the winter too.
