Trolling

Recommended Posts

I can't even count how many email adresses I've got. What would be the point? Not that I like trolls... On the Dutch KNVvL forum you need a license number... It cuts back on trolling but now prospective students and tandem passengers etc can't post [:/]

See http://www.mailinator.com.

There are other services just like it. Temporary, valid email address. Email addresses are not going to prevent trolling. That's part of why this site NEEDS moderation. I don't always agree with the decisions the moderators make, but I do recognize that this site wouldn't work without moderation. In fact, I would like the bonfire to be more heavily moderated... some people are getting annoying.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that is thinking that.

You're not the only two that think that either.

Although I'm sure yall have seen me as part of the problem at some point in time if not now; however, I would think that the community as a whole would benifit from a heavier hand moderating.

Are there threads that we have missed that have broken the rules?

Not broken the rules as much as just are annoying for no good reason. There has been an upswing of people posting stupid one liner posts, posting just to see who they can get to reply, thread titles that are 3 sentences long, and just general "trolling" activities by long time community members lately.

Also the "Dublin hijacking" is getting out of control. Sure its going to be a great boogie but does there really need to be 50 threads on it and does it need to coming up in 1 out of or 5 or 1 out of 10 threads off topic?

I agree with you, but what is annoying to one person is not annoying to others. Many of the threads you referred to have caught on "fire" and have a lot of responses. Seems that there are some people out there who enjoy them.

Most the replies to those threads are by the same 4-5 people. I'm sure I could make a thread catch on fire too if I replied to every reply in it ;)

Thats another suggestion. Increase the tolerance factor for hot threads. At one point yesterday over half the threads seemed to be on fire :S

Right, but what are we supposed to do, limit the number of times someone can reply to the same thread?

That sounds like a very good suggestion. I think some people post to those threads with the only goal to make it catch on fire. Go make a new post about it. :)

No, but discuss community standerds with them. Posting to see your thread count climb does nothing to further the community feeling here. Thats what I find annoying. I am pretty good at scanning posts to see whats worth my time and when I'm only reading 1 out of 25 threads thats a large signal to noise ratio.

Your Rules area says: Posts that contain material that we deem to be blatantly or unnecessarily racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted, pornographic, or otherwise offensive, will be removed. Yet you allow racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted and poronographic jokes, and posts.

Your rules say: Personal attacks and hate posts will not be tolerated in any forum. There is name calling in almost every thread.

Sounds to me like you care about fairness in our beloved online community. Well, me too. B|

While the criteria you mentioned from the rules are a bit subjective and open to individual Moderator interpretation, we try very hard to be consistent. HH also designed the rules and chose his Moderators so all of those things fit together.

I have two suggestions for you:

1) If you see a thread that seems unfair to you, PM one of the Moderators from that foum (listed at the top). We do our level best to read every post. There are also Moderators worldwide on purpose so that hopefully someone is nearly always on. There are many options we have in dealing with those types of posts. Just bring them to our attention!

2) Fill out your profile. Seemingly anonymous posts, especially on controversial topics, are not as powerful and forwarding to these discussions as those from seemingly "real" people. It also helps lend you a bit of credibility here (not because of your jump numbers), because people know who's talking.

Thanks for bringing this up!

I think the key words there are "blatantly or unnecessarily".

I think you're overexaggerating a little there.

Thanks for your reply.

I have two suggestions for you.

1. go look at the blatant racist joke on Sorry..Can't help it HAHAHAHHAHAAAA!! Maybe these people can't help their hatred, but leaving it posted is reprehensible.

2. Go read some news articles to learn that this world is filled with pyscho-idiots that stalk and kill people. There is no way I'd put any real personally identifiable information on a web site. I've already been part of the Choicepoint identity theft. I wouldn't even put a license number up because I've been told that any dz can look up your name, address, phone etc just on a license number.

What we allow on here is totally at our discretion (as the rules clearly state), and I'm fine with that joke. If I removed every post that offended someone we'd be left with...umm... about 17 posts... I think!
