Phone for you?

Has anyone ever tried to make a cell phone call while under canopy? Just pull high and dial away!

I wonder if you could even get reception?

***

Not only will you get great reception...

But possibly a nasty letter and a fine!

Depending on phone type, and location...
you might just access a 1/2 dozen cell tower stations!

I know from experience!!
Got a grumpy letter from Big Brother about
FCC regulations against using a personal cell phone
while "engaging in light aircraft operations"

It was just a nasty warning...
but I took the hint! :o

TITLE 47--TELECOMMUNICATION

CHAPTER I--FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS
COMMISSION (CONTINUED)

PART 22--PUBLIC MOBILE SERVICES--Table of Contents

Subpart H--Cellular Radiotelephone Service

Sec. 22.925 Prohibition on airborne operation of cellular telephones.

Cellular telephones installed in or carried aboard airplanes,
balloons or any other type of aircraft must not be operated while such
aircraft are airborne (not touching the ground). When any aircraft
leaves the ground, all cellular telephones on board that aircraft must
be turned off. The following notice must be posted on or near each
cellular telephone installed in any aircraft:
``The use of cellular telephones while this aircraft is airborne is
prohibited by FCC rules, and the violation of this rule could result in
suspension of service and/or a fine. The use of cellular telephones
while this aircraft is on the ground is subject to FAA regulations.''

I don't believe a parachute meets the definition of an aircraft. Therefore if you turn it on after leaving the aircraft, you should be legal. Smart? Probably not. But not in violation of the FCC regulation... I dont think.

I used to work in the radio biz and one of my co-workers (Outlaw Dave, for those from Houston) did a tandem with me and was able to place a call. He phoned in to the studio and had them record the call for air as he gave a play by play of the ride. The phone lost signal at about 2 grand though.

I can't say that I did this... of course! ;) But I am a pilot and know of people.. ;) ;) that have made many phone calls from a Cessna 172 as well as one instance under canopy at 5k a call was placed to say "Hi Mom"!!! I did hear a rumor that placing a call at that altitude could overload multiple towers as it continued to seek the best signal from multiple towers. dun no though
Ever stop to think and forget to start again
