frankiebrina 0 #1 December 9, 2003 ?? Recently skydived with a guy from germany that actually uses a watch that has built in Altimeter. Is it safe?? Is it accurate?? What brand out there is recommended if any. How many readings per second must it have for it to accurately read while skydiving?? Thanks ahead!!! kelel01 1 #2 December 9, 2003 You know, I believe (depending on the brand) that some of those watches only update altitude every five seconds, which is not often enough by my standards. But I'm still very dependent upon my altimeter to determine my altitude. I'm sure others will chime in here. Kelly
TALONSKY 0 #3 December 9, 2003 I use a Sunnto Vector. They state that they are not for use with skydiving but it is just as accurate if not more so than my anolog one. About the only problems I have ran into is 1. it is semi easy to bump another botton and take it out of the Altimeter mode and 2. Since it is a wrist watch my freefly jacket sleeve covers it up in free fall. So I use it for landing setup or any RW or birdman suit jumps. Nightingale 0 #4 December 9, 2003 The makers of these watches advise that wearers not use them for skydiving.
GeeeeeeFly 0 #5 December 9, 2003 And that's exactly why you see a lot of veteran running around with these on thier wrists... Cool points... champu 1 #6 December 10, 2003 QuoteHow many readings per second must it have for it to accurately read while skydiving?? That depends, how often do you want to know what your altitude is if you're falling ~200ft/sec and it updates once a second, it'll jump in 200ft increments. I think these are designed for hiking more than anything else. be sure not to try and use one of these while skydiving "Gee, we don't seem to be falling very fast... in fact, I think we're going up very slowly!" FIREFLYR 0 #9 December 10, 2003 Freestyle makes the best watch/altimeter that I've heard of. supposedly very accurate.shows every 10 feet. look on ebay under altimeter or watch /altimeter I,ve seen them new for like $75!"One flew East, and one flew West..............one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "There's absolutely no excuse for the way I'm about to act"
Designer 0 #10 December 10, 2003 o.k.,this only reminds me of my project to put heads up display of decent altitude on side of face shields(green, yellow, red) of my future helmet. It also reminds me that I've been thinking and working on this for twenty yrs now! ScottishJohn 25 #11 December 11, 2003 if you already have an Alti why bother with this. Save your money and by jump tickets.---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think my attitude stinks you should smell my fingers
tictoc 0 #12 December 11, 2003 I also use the Sunnto. Yes they are desighned for hicking. I was leary as you are before I got one. I did some reserch. The digitude updates every .25 seconds. At its fastest setting the Sunnto updates every .5 seconds. This keep me from byeing one untill I talked to one of the people on airspeed that had one and he said he loved it. So I bought one. It is all I use for a visual alti. on 99% of my jumps. I love it. It seem to be more acurate than my digitude. As another said it's biggest draw back is that you can hit a button in freefall.-------------------------------------------------------- Some one must go to the edge for others to be able to find it. But if you go be sure you can make it back.
