What does "dirt dive" refer to? Is that the layout of RW on the ground prior to going up?

Its a dress rehersal for what the jump is going to look like.

It rarely does though...

Correct! It's like a rehearsal before the jump. You did them as a student walking through the dive flow with your instructor(s).

I've never seen FF'ers doing that, but Its kinda hard to stand on your head in the packing room, with someone hurtling past at 250mph.

They do have a flight plan (as such) though.

Have you ever watched very serious FFers? I've seen many FF jumps dirtdived. Sometimes with chairs being used or with comments along the lines of "ok, now I'm on my head" even though they're standing upright.

Headdown dirt dives are done regularly.
Their orientation to the earth means nothing, as you'd are seeing what you dirt dive on the ground, as you would in the air, unless some in the skydive are in a sit or standing orientation.
