Before it Became Wreck.Skydive . . .

Recommended Posts

The Bonfire thread about past trolls, made me think of the early days of Usenet and rec.skydiving a time when most only had internet access through universities.

When I first came online in 1985 it was through local bulletin boards (BBS) and a bit later through GEnie:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEnie

There weren't "trolls" per se in those days, but "flame wars" were rampant. And most of these revolved around issues of moderating and censorship. We resisted those things back then, but it was either that or what happened to rec.skydive when it turned into wreck.skydive. And if you look at rec.skydive today it’s nothing but a big spamfest.

I'm pretty sure the below attachment shows the very beginning of rec.skydiving

The actual page is here:

And you can read some other early threads here, just click on some of the "all time posters":

"Blast Handles - Wave of the future"

Wow... who would have thought it.... :D:D:D

Thanks for the look back in time. :)
I was on rec.skydiving from I guess 1995 or 1996 through about 2003 before I started up on here.

I know somebody who did that in the plane at Quincy years ago going up to 21K. He got low enough to actually see people walking on the ground before realizing he was LOW! :D

Dont forget Snuffy and Peanut.

Man I forgot all about Snuffy! What a weird character! Whatever happened to him? Peanut seemed to try and copy Snuffy's way of speaking but nobody can lisp like Snuffy. :D

I peeked in there a bit and claimed that there was a problem with the number of jump plane accidents. Someone said I had no proof or list of jump plane accidents.

Whoever that was THANK YOU! I think my list is pretty long now. 100s of hours looking but I think it's fairly complete.

So it wasn't a complete waste of time on the wreck.

No, actually. :)

The beginning is here, in 1988:

ftp://ftp.afn.org/skydive/rec.skydiving.archives/

Someone should maybe talk to these guys about this, because the Skydive! Archive site is down now, and there's no telling how long the ftp site will last. It would be a shame to lose the history if someone has a place to store it. (Note: I've got the whole mess downloaded, but that's not the same thing. And I haven't bothered to get the other stuff, like the dropzone reviews.)

archive.org has the Skydive! Archive here:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.afn.org/skydive/

...but the posts from the the ftp site aren't collected, although the posts from '93 to '96 are:

http://web.archive.org/web/20020501075208/www.afn.org/skydive/usenet/

I first got online back in 1989 using Prodigy I recall.

I don't recall the browser, it was not a Windows operating system software program. I believe the software program was developed in Canada for DOS although I don't recall the name now. It was not a part of the Prodigy program.

And a whole bunch of others, a fair number of whom are now dead or living lives apart from skydiving.

Even so, it was a great group until usenet fell to the web forums.

Hey RhondaLea,

I took the archives, put them in a searchable and threaded database, registered the domain name recskydiving.org and hosted it from home. I've since moved to an external host who's database space is a bit more frugal and it would cost me about $20 a month to host the data. Does anyone have a spare 150 MB of SQL Server space to spare (I guess it could be MySql with a bit of conversion)? Rest assured, the old stuff is archived somewhere!
