As much as Mitch McConnell damaged politics, pulled the levers of power to create policies and structure grossly at odd with the democratic will of the people, and fostered the unchecked growth of extremism in the GOP… he is at least a sane person who understands that government is important and at some point you have to be willing to compromise if the only alternative is a government that does not work at all. 
 

So while he is a better devil than the ‘burn it all down if we don’t get what we want because total victory is the only thing that matters’ crazy MAGA person who might succeed him, it is also largely his fault that his successor might be such a person.

So after the sudden and aggressive ouster of McCarthy as Speaker for the republicans, Mike Johnson seemed like a safe pick.  He had the least amount of experience as any Speaker, ever, which was a plus for the idiocracy of the GOP these days.  He was also as hard right as they come (anti-LGBT, anti-minority) thus appealing to the Trumpies.

But the honeymoon didn't last long.  MTG has just made a motion to oust him after he was foolish enough to do his job and call for a vote on the temporary measure that funded the government.  The GOP has responded forcefully by . . . not recognizing her, so she can't introduce it and start the clock on it.

I think a lot of republicans are sweating this.  If Greene and her cohorts manage to destroy Johnson, and prevent any passage of any bills, voters are going to see that and realize the consequences of sticking with a republican majority.

A significant number of democrats have said that if a motion to vacate does come up they will vote to keep Johnson. Apparently they have had enough. Leadership is signalling that they are willing to make a deal to continue to support him in exchange for an up or down vote on aid to Ukraine.

Since the "conservative" GOP congresspersons objected to the spending in this bill, I'd like to suggest that they cut spending by first reducing all federal expenditures in "taker" states  to parity with taxes paid to the federal government by those states.  This should result in a reduction in taxes in "giver" states, in line with GOP principles.

Seems fair to me.
