The challenge for the grass roots left

Recommended Posts

Listening to an analyst on MSNBC, he said in order for the grass roots left to replicate the success of the tea party, they would have to self police and remove anarchists, communists, socialist, radical feminists, environmental extremists and tell Lena Dunham "to exit stage left," as these elements are unacceptable to the general population.

I thought to myself, who remains?

Thoughts?

He said the Tea Party successfully blocked out the unsavory elements of the right, the question that remains open is can the left can do the same.

I dunno. I saw plenty of unsavory Tea Party members. Idiots bringing AR-15s into Starbucks isn't exactly the way you win over folks from the left side of the aisle.

The fight is for the center, a fight that, for now, the Tea Party has demonstrably won.

Oh dear, no. I disagreed with a lot of stuff the Tea Party had to say, but if you believe the Trump administration represents them, you've been conned.

The Tea Party in no way won. The oligarchy did.

I disagree. IMO if that were true then Hillary would not have won the popular vote.

When the Tea Party started with the "Obama is a Muslim" BS, and that he was born in Kenya, it was hard to find a senior member of the GOP to denounce it. The success of the Tea Party was their willingness to embrace the bat shit crazy right.

Understood, but the Tea Party members were only "useful idiots" for the oligarchy in this election.

They were played like a fiddle.

For a right wing guy you sure have a lot to say about the left. The far left is no nuttier than the far right. And they hardly ever shoot up churches, take over federal property or blow up office buildings and call the dead children "collateral damage".

My thoughts are that the general population shifts their views ever so slightly every now and then and that the results move political mountains. I expect the Trump disaster to cause one of those shifts.

The extremes on both ends will remain isolated minorities.
Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

It's relatively easy to do some flashy stuff in the first couple of weeks.

Let's see if he can actually bring back any significant number of jobs in the manufacturing or even coal industries. I seriously doubt it. I also seriously doubt he's going to build the wall and have Mexico pay for it.

We will have to wait and see. Obama did not fail on his promise to close Gitmo until January 20, 2117.

Cute, but I know as you should, that the reason Gitmo didn't close wasn't because he didn't try. The Republicans in Congress blocked him. Fact.

Not until after a Democrat controlled congress did it first. Fact.

So when will he release his tax returns, and appoint a special prosecutor?

My thoughts are that this is a good look into your mind, not the actual grassroots left.

You may sincerely believe that the millions of people who voted for Obama and Clinton are composed entirely of "anarchists, communists, socialist, radical feminists, [and] environmental extremists" but even a cursory moment of thought about that shows how ridiculous the idea is.

Maybe if you realize that people on the left of the spectrum also love their country, have fought in her wars, work hard, pay their taxes, love their children, and care what happens to the world you might just stop being so close minded. Heck, you might even listen to things that people outside your echo chamber have to say.

I am surrounded by hard working, tax paying, children loving democrats. I went to a Super Bowl party, hosted by one, my children are being taught by them. They are my friends and neighbors. I save my political pontifications for DZ.com because if I shared them on Facebook I would loose half of my friends. As I have said before brenthutch is my snarky, acerbic alter ego. I am not a hater.

The question I am posing is; can democrats harness the energy of the alt-left without being co-opted by it? It seems to me the strategy of pandering to grievance/identity politics has backfired and party leadership is unwilling or unable to turn the page.

Are you writing a comic book?

There is no "alt-left."

What would that even be?

What is the evidence that the Tea Party has won the centre?

White House, Senate, House of Reps. And
