I don't. There are far more dangerous nuclear weapon wielders in the world.

Please name these other countries which are more belligerent than Iran at threatening another with annihilation.

Pak warns India against Abbottabad-like ‘misadventure’
Friday, May 06, 2011, 00:41

Islamabad: Pakistan army and the government on Thursday reacted sharply warning India against any Abbottabad-like "misadventure", saying it would be responded to "very strongly" that could lead to a "terrible catastrophe".

The warning came after a meeting of the Corps Commanders chaired by Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani which decided to reduce the level of US military personnel in Pakistan and threatened to review intelligence cooperation with it, if a repeat of "violation of sovereignty" like on Monday occurred.

I'm thinking that threatening to wipe a country off the map is a *bit* more belligerent than destroying a presidential office or a city.

Fair enough. So North Korea is worse than Iran and Pakistan.

Equal to Iran, both worse than Pakistan...at least based on the data given.

North and South Korea have been at a virtual state of war since the end of the Korean War. This is nothing new for N. Korea, which has a long history of idle threats, using them only as leverage to get other things they want. Pres. Clinton even fell for it.

The India/Pakistan thing is a border dispute, not likely to lead to a nuclear exhange, and limited only to the disputed border region.

North Korea doesn't possess the means to carry out a threat to wipe out the U.S. Iran, given nukes, does have the capability to wipe out Israel, and they threaten to do so. So it's not just the threat alone that counts, it's also the ability to make good on the threat.

So a country with working nuclear weapons, who has threatened to wipe us off the map, cannot threaten the US - but Iran, without working nuclear weapons, can threaten Israel?

You must trust Kim Jong-Il more than I do.

Kim Jong-Il has always seemed to be a pragmatist. He does some stuff that seems really whacky to us. But if you look at it from his point of view, as a dictator trying to hold power over his people, then it makes more sense (not complete sense, but more).

He forces the US to pay attention to him. He gets a former US President (Clinton) to come, stand on stage and take pictures with him.
From his point of view (and that of the NK citizens) that elevates his stature.
And solidifies his hold on power.

He probably isn't going to do anything really stupid, because if he did, we'd turn most of NK into a parking lot. Which wouldn't be any fun to rule.

And there is a school of thought that if Iran obtains nukes, they would have to take the same pragmatic stance.
It would elevate their stature in the region, give them more influence among their neighbors, but if they actually used them, they'd be toast.
Even nuking Tel Aviv wouldn't destroy Israel. I'd bet very heavily that the Israeli nukes are dispersed enough that there would be something left for retaliation if they needed.

This is the belief of many in the study. It's very likely true - at the 95% confidence or better. But...depending on your frame of reference, there are still many negatives around them having the bomb. Their threats have to be taken more seriously, and your options are more limited.

Absolutely there are more negatives than positives to Iran obtaining nukes.
It would be far simpler if they didn't.

But the idea that they would actually use them if they got them is pretty far fetched.
