skittles_of_SDC 0 #1 January 1, 2010 I was hoping a couple of people that are followers of the corresponding faiths could recommend a particular copy of their religious text that is the most accurate translation. I figure all the King James bibles are the same but I have been told the Tanakh and Koran very slightly in translation from publisher to publisher. What I would not like is to get into a debate about these various religions. Thanks in advance.
 Southern_Man 0 #2 January 1, 2010 I cannot help you with the Koran, as I do not know enough about it. For the Tanakh, there are not all that many choices and all of them are based on the Masoretic Text. I believe the most popular is the one by the Jewish Publication Society. Most accurate is a very hard thing to define, since translation is both an art and a science. The best bet, if you really want to learn, is to study Hebrew. A lot of the published editions have both a Hebrew and an English version in them. Since Hebrew is still the accepted temple language (like Latin before Vatican II). there is less reliance on translated editions in general."What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
 skittles_of_SDC 0 #3 January 2, 2010 Thanks for the info. I really just wanna read through it but read the most accurate one I can. I'm not really ready to put in the time to learn hebrew since I don't plan to convert to the religion I just want a better understanding of it. If I were to decide to go back to school for religious studies (not likely, or maybe it is) then I might consider learning the language. I'll take a look at the JPS one you mentioned. Thanks. It is probably the most significant Hindu text and the one where Krishna reveals him to be the supreme being (Yahweh/Allah). They are both based on the Torah... the first 5 books of the Bible. The Torah is much older than the Koran but they are both Abrahamic religions. To the OP. Study Abraham (Abram) if you want a greater understanding of the faiths. I tell you bro, its all about Abraham, who is revered in both religions as the man of the covenants. Read Genesis 16 and 17 (King James will be fine, but NIV is easier to read) for an intorduction into whats going on, keeping in mind the radical time difference between the Torah and the Koran. Fundamental Islam is based on Ishmael, and fundamental Judaism is based on Issac. Mohammad is a decendant of Ishmael, David is the descendant of Issac, Jesus is the decendant of David, therefore Christianity is also based on Abraham, but in a much different way."We didn't start the fire"
 Andy9o8 0 #14 January 4, 2010 Quote Make note, if you're gonna read this book either you need to have a very good vocabulary or you need to have a dictionary nearby (i used a dictionary on my iPhone). ...or in the alternative, some people do manage to use "having had a good education" as a substitute.
