In 2009, roughly 47% of households, or 71 million, will not owe any federal income tax, according to estimates by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

when you get something for free, you're not that intested in how it runs. If you pay for something, you're more interested in making it work right. With that many people not paying taxes,

Someone I used to jump with once told me he'd do free jump seminars, but people don't respect your time if you're giving it away to them.

You certainly don't care much about what it costs (someone else), though.

It's not the people that set the tax code. Its politicians. I am sure if politicians set a new tax code and said that everybody must pay then everybody WOULD pay. Don't blame the poor for the fact that they don't pay the same taxes as the rich. It's the politicians that set it up this way. ;)

The reason the politicians set it up this way is obvious. If you can give free stuff to 51% of the people, and make them like you, you'll keep getting elected. If you can set it up so that you only take from a quarter of the voters, to give free stuff to three quarters, you're always going to have a bunch of people voting for you to keep giving them stuff. And who cares about that other quarter? Sure, they'll never vote for you, but as long as you keep your 51% happy, that doesn't matter much.

It's interesting to me that the US has the most progressive taxation in the the industrialized world. We have a far more slanted tax burden than any of the supposedly more "socialist" nations in Europe. At least there they've figured out that if you want people to feel some sense of responsibility, then everyone has to pay something into the system.

I'm going to be very curious to see if this continues. What will we do when 85% of Americans pay no federal income tax? At some point the system will collapse, because the tax rates on the actual taxpayers will become too onerous.

What's up with that Galt dude, anyway?

Utter nonsense.

Really? Ever seen someone drive a rental car?

It's human nature. No sense of ownership = no respect

ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get it?

WOMAN #1: I don’t know, his stash. I don’t know. (laughter) I don’t know where he got it from, but he givin’ it to us, to help us.

------------

ROGULSKI: Where’s the money coming from?

WOMAN: I believe it’s coming from the City of Detroit or the state.

ROGULSKI: Where did they get it from?

WOMAN: Some funds that was forgiven [sic] by Obama.

ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get the funds?

WOMAN: Obama getting the funds from . . . Ummm, I have no idea, to tell you the truth. He’s the president

Don't know, don't care, just give it to me...

Maybe you get them for free or steal them, but I have to pay for car rentals.

Criminals do all kinds of bad things. Like shoot people.

Heck, since I've been both very poor and a criminal at different times in my life, I'm not sure how to take that.

Where did I equate poor people and criminals? I'm not really seeing that in what I wrote.

People who drive stolen cars are criminals. You equate them with those who get services for free (see the OP).

Have you ever gotten a gift and been bitter? You might not need or want it, but it was free.

Other people spending money on you explains why you get candy corn at Halloween. Spending other people's money on myself equals belgian dark chocolate. Spending my money on me means some Ghirardelli. Spending someone else's money on others means getting a ream of paper for Halloween - you don't want it, and nobody else would buy it for you, but someone thinks it's what you need.

Hey, a ream of paper it good, right? And through 20 levels of govt. bureaucracy it runs $30,

Nonsense, indeed.

I'm pretty sure you were the one who brought up the idea of driving a car without paying for it.

Regardless, what makes you equate people who are poor with people who get services for free?

In this example, we're talking about people with household incomes of 50k/yr not paying federal income tax. What's your definition of "poor," anyway?

The politicians made sure that the wealthy fat-cats could fleece the people, drive the economy into the ground, and force more than 10% of the workers into unemployment.

Then they forced the taxpayers to bail out the bankrupt companies so that all the foreign investors could get their money back.

The politicians were hoping that the taxpayers would fund all this. But if the taxpayers aren't working, how can they pay taxes?

Wow. Are there people who are really like that? Who care only in proportion to its cost (or their pay?)

I guess my experience is different than yours. Some of the best coaching I have gotten has been free, and I try to pay that back.

It's the Republican "Voodoo" economic model: enact economic policies that dramatically increase the gulf between rich and poor, and then act all outraged when 47% of households don't make enough money to pay taxes.
