Did you have your passport with you the last time you went to the ER? A driver's license is way too easy to fake. And people in accidents often don't have those papers with them.
Do you want emergency care for a person held up while the issue of citizenship is settled? Would you want it held up for your citizenship to be settled if you were in an accident, or one of your friends?
I'm not saying it's good to have illegal aliens. But right now emergency rooms see who comes in, regardless of who they are. They do, in fact, try to get people to pay ahead of time, and to settle all kinds of stuff. But the problem with requiring paperwork is the people who don't have it -- do you then turn them away? And who pays when that person sues, because they weren't illegal after all, they just didn't have their paperwork?

Good luck Wendy. They never answer those questions, I'm pretty convinced by now that it's because they can't.
It's worth noting that, when an illegal alien's emergency treatment is reimbursed by Medicaid, the money goes to the hospital/doctors that provided the service, not to the illegal alien. The real outcome of not "covering" illegal aliens (keeping in mind that at the time of the emergency, there isn't any timely way to figure out who is and who is not a citizen, often you have to treat first and ask questions later) will only be to screw the doctors and hospitals, who are certainly good US citizens/corporations.

Already explained this to you...there is NO provision to provide proof of legal status and there is NO penalty for getting care if you are not legal. In this case....it would be easy to get care even if you are not here legally.
My solution is not an identity card...it is to NOT increase government involvement in health care. They have already made a mess of Medicare and Medicaid...give them something else to make a mess? Country can not afford it....

I have no problem with an ID card, I already have a passport, a pilot's license, a drivers license and carry my private health insurance card. I would just swap the health card for the ID card.
Country couldn't afford to invade Iraq either, but the moron did it and many more morons supported him. On the whole I'd rather we spent money on our own health instead of killing other people who presented no threat to us. But that's just me.

Yep. The only system that's worse is the private insurance-based + free care for deadbeats system we have now.

Medicaid and Medicare fraud are estimated in the 5% to 8% range. For private insurers its about .05%. Government control is very expensive.

Not only the HMO's, which are middlemen, but doctors making 300k and 500k shortly out of med school. RN's making 100k shortly out of nursing school; if you go to Europe or Canada doctors make < 1/2 what they do here. Also, we make specialists rather than doctors, many of them elective surgery specialists, which do nothing for humanity. Total inefficiency from the start to the end. Clean it up and there are enough savings there to allow everyone to have a doctor.
