The US Government Can't Get Anything Right!

I like that.

Government does need to set certain standards; and needs to regulate, monitor, and prosecute abuses.

But there is nothing like competition to foster innovation and create price pressure.

When the government actually gets into the business end of things we get stuff like $200 hammers and $300 toilet seats.

You also get $200 hammers and $300 toilet seats because governmental agencies can't call the costs to develop special-use items like that R&D and absorb them elsewhere. E.g. a toilet seat that fits into a long-range bomber, or a hammer designed for a small space, and to not exceed a certain force.

Does that make it smart? Not necessarily. But the rules for writing that stuff up is different between government and companies -- greater transparency is required of the government (and I don't have a problem with that).

Any time someone lives in a glass house, it's much easier to see what's going on.

A compamy might get the job done quicker and cheaper but less people are likely to benifit from the process as a whole, including the profit that is generated.

True. No company ever wants to provide a benefit to society. Instead, they build bridges for free that are not to be used. Nor do they employ people.

[Reply]Once the profit goes in the billion dollar bank accounts, it is gone from the street and into the affluent sector of society.

Indeed. The wealthy don't buy anything. They don't recirculate money. They just take money out of the economy.

[Reply]Socialism is sharing and capitalism is hording,

Both are hoarding. Capitalism is the hoarding of assets by millions and the redistribution by millions pursuant to their individual preferences. The capitalist does not hoard by force but hoards by the choice of millions.

Like Hearst Castle. A brilliant use of money. Hearst kept people employed worldwide in the design, building and maintenance of the place for 50 years. Then he died, and there is now a sub economy that keeps people employed to this day because people will come see it. And people chose to be employed there. Millions of individuals choose to go see it. Millions more choose not to go see it. It's all individual choice and nobody was forced to spend a cent on it. (And it's a place that has actually turned a profit).

Hearst's hoarding of money and lavish redistribution of money created jobs - careers. Yes, it is managed by the State, who charges money for those people to see it. Sound familiar?

Socialism is also hoarding. Only instead of the hoarding of millions and redistribution by their individual choices the socialist hoards in one place (the government) and redistributes by the choices of a few.

The socialist hoards money by force. Hearst had Pulitzer to compete with. The government has nobody to compete with. People don't choose to pay the government - they are required. People don't choose where their money goes - the government decides.

Both capitalism and socialism hoard and redistribute. The similarities end there.

[Reply]We need something in between!

We have that now.

No, we need capitalism. Unfettered, lesse faire capitalism. It is the only economic system which supports individual freedom. The bastard mongrel we have now simply invites further intrusion.

Just wondering, how much have you given charitably in the past year? Ever pay for a child's surgery?

Sure and the privately run versions of all of that are much better! Private schools do better. Foods that are inspected by third partys and are held to higher standards are what I buy! As for weather, the satelites are designed, build, and launched by private industries! The national weather service is stationed in Norman, oklahoma and is run by college students. Privately funded highways, such as some in california, don't have the same traffic jams and last much longer. My house has not burned down because the builders have thier own quality standards which go beyond the governments and my house is much safer than most! I make sure of it! I wasn't maimed or killed at work because we choose to be safe, not becuase the government mandates it, but becuase we have a lot of skilled workers and it would hurt and cost the company a lot if I or someone else was injured. We also have many companies that perform safety audits, not against government standards but against ours and theirs that they have developed and impose upon us on the well sites! and as for the defense and internet......most everything the defense uses is contract to private business! Was the F-22, f-14, f-15, f-16 developed by the military. No! The fact is that NASA is way behind in rocket technology and they put very few things into orbit compared to private industry. In fact, more discoveries, such as the recent supposed impact on jupiter, are made by amatuers or privately owned telescopes and not NASA.
Anything the government does is done better by the private sector. If this were not true then cuba would be a great place....which it is not despite what your public officials say.....why do you think people flee there! Why do people come here for medical care. Because its run by the government?
Come on....the US postal service is slow and bankrupt!
What happened to freedom and personal responsibility! The only thing the government was established for was to protect our freedoms. That includes the freedom to be wrong or stupid!!!!!!!!! So if you think its stupid of me to not have healthcare then its my right to be stupid! If you think its stupid of me to not invest money for my retirement that its my freedom to be stupid. I am the only one that has to live with that so leave me alone. The goverment has no right to take my money and "invest" it for me at a much much lower return than I can invest it for! Its mine! I need it to take care of me and my family. And they are my family and if I decide to have more kids than I can support that is my decision and if you find it sad that my kids are hungry then you should do something about it.....not the government. Adopt one or donate to a charity. Charities do more than the government could even imagine. I want my freedom.....why do you want to take it from me!!!!!!

Of course, HISTORY is a great teacher. The unfettered capitalism of the 19th and early 20th centuries gave us unsafe factories and mines, adulterated food and snake-oil pharmaceuticals (among other things). It took govt. action to get any improvement. In the mid 20th Century the auto industry vigorously opposed implementing safety and pollution standards until forced to do so. The electrical power industry also opposed pollution controls until forced to do so. Without govt. intervention the free market tobacco companies would still be pushing their products on kids' TV.

Employee collective bargaining should address

Common sense should address, and with communication between different geographical areas much improved since then it's not as easy to get away with.

Consumer pressure should address if it's a priority to the consumer.

For parents to address. If you're that much in need of a government to wipe your ass you are just taking resources from a productive member of society.
Congress should meet for about eight to ten weeks. Show up, review and make appropriate changes and approvals for the military budget, decide which infrastructure projects are due for the fiscal year, mediate disagreements between states and go back to their real jobs.

Those like divot actually learn the lessons from history. You are talking about the government protecting people from spending their money on products to make their dicks bigger.

On stopping people at all costs from smoking a joint or snorting some blow.

On preventing people from actually having (GASP!) a gun.

Yours is a system that says that people cannot take care of themselves and need a nanny state. Mine is a system that says people can take care of themselves and if you want to get high then go right ahead, there, DJ AM.

Divot learns from history. So do I.

And I make decisions that you may consider to be "bad" decisions but are great decisions for me.

Bad decisions? That depends on the goal. You are an engineer and you know that a bad decision in one context is a good decision in another.

Yours is the nanny state. Adults cannot be trusted and must be instructed on how to live.

Bad decisions. Ha. "Time out, divot. Write on the chalkboard 50 times 'I will not be bad.'"

Those like you that feel that personal responsibility and accountability are bad things will remain a drain on society, producing nothing of tangible value and indoctrinating a generation unable to forge their own paths and pay their own prices. We've digressed through "someone should do something" to "the government should do something" when we should have stopped at "I will do something". Quit whining and grab the reins.

(GASP!)

You would be gasping more without the pollution controls on cars and power plants that the companies wouldn't do by themselves.

You would be eating much more adulterated and tainted foods without the controls that the food packers wouldn't impose by themselves.

That SUV about which you are always priding yourself would be far less safe without the features that auto companies wouldn't install by themselves.

Every "restriction" that the right grumbles about was imposed on account of an abuse that the capitalist system couldn't correct on its own.

Of course. I do not disagree.

I think lawsuits have been just as, if not more, effective. And much less expensive.

So why does it exceed standards for survivability? I got a car from Volvo - a company with a long history of safety innovation. It seems that Volvo even invented the three-point restraint. Yes, I looked for a vehicle built to tank-like specifications.

Or, a perceived "abuse" or "unfairness" that may or may not have actually existed.

Yes, abuses did occur.

Yes, some regulation is necessary.

No, I cannot take a piss in my backyard without violating a regulation.

No, I cannot ride a motorcycle without a helmet without violating the law.

Yes, I wear a helmet every time I ride a bike or get on some skates. So what?

If you read back a few posts, you will see that THAT was the point I was making in response to the call for "unfettered capitalism" (post#29, this thread).

History shows that unfettered capitalism has rather a dismal record of abuses and being unable to fix them.

Do you think it coincidence that after FDA inspection budgets were cut we had a rash of e-coli outbreaks?

Do you think it a coincidence that after FAA inspection budgets were cut that we had a rash of airline maintenance issues?

Which is why some regulation is necessary, especially over things that informed consumers can't readily deal with themselves (like drug safety, maintenance standards for airlines...).

So we agree.:)

using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank.

Hey Mathias, do you realize the Federal Reserve Bank isn't a government bank but rather a group of private bankers?
That's right.., the federal reserve bank is as federal as Federal Express, and there are no reserves.
Golly , I thought you German people understood bankers !!!

But we already have a thread on parents' rights to determine what's best for their kids. Why don't you go HERE and tell us how those parents were just doing the right thing?
